This Cal-Italian restaurant isn’t the first place these days you might think of when you’re craving pizza, but Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan’s impeccable wood-fired pies are one of the many reasons Milo + Olive is a longtime mainstay on the Westside. The pizza here uses a mix of Sperry organic and whole wheat flours, a lower-than-normal oven temperature and a two-day fermentation process to create thick, chewy crust that's impossible to not to love. (There’s also a gluten-free option available.) During brunch, Milo + Olive serves a breakfast pizza topped with pork belly sausage, eggs, roasted potatoes and fontina cream, but our favorite comes from the dinner menu: the mixed mushroom, which combines fontina val d’aosta, thyme, lemon zest and Parmesan with a bounty of fungi.

Milo & Olive is a baking overachiever, the kid in class who raises their hand and asks about extra credit. At this busy Santa Monica spot, you‘ll find a wonderland of cookies, brioche, pizzas, sandwiches, and danishes, as well as several varieties of seasonal croissants. The classic ones are made with whole-grain flour and French butter, which result in a pastry that’s plump and crunchy, with fine inner layers that you can count like the rings of a tree.

Whenever I am on the Westside, I always make a stop at Milo and Olive. Chef Zoe Nathan is one of my favorite L.A.

In fact, the location was originally sought out simply as a larger space to do the breads for owners Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan’s other restaurants, Rustic Canyon and Huckleberry. When they stumbled on a space with a second kitchen and seating, the game plan changed to fulfill a secondary wish: bringing a new type of hybrid California pizza to the Westside that playfully riffs on a variety of inspirations. Specifically, they wanted one that traveled well, which ruled out traditional Neapolitan.

All the bread baking for the restaurants from the husband-and-wife team of Josh Loeb and baker Zoe Nathan (including Rustic Canyon and Huckleberry) is done at Milo & Olive, a homey, pizza-driven restaurant. So you can see the ovens in the open kitchen, the fires of the pizza oven — the breads on the shelves and the pastries in the case when you first walk in. This is terrific stuff: perfectly formed baguettes, gorgeous little cakes and pastries and wonderful whole grain sourdough loaves.

Milo and Olive offers diners in the Santa Monica area well made comfort food, crafted using the freshest ingredients. Whenever you mention Milo and Olive, the first thing people say in return is, “The garlic knots!!. ” Which are a must-order. Instead of being small knots bathed in butter and chopped garlic, Milo + Olive’s garlic knot is a whole head of garlic baked inside a giant pizza dough purse.
