Alligator Soul Restaurant makes it to the top of my list today for a whole variety of reasons. First of all, since this arctic el is about famous restaurants in Savannah there was no way this one wasn’t gonna make it somewhere on the list. But the reason it is in the number one spot is because they offer a highland cajun menu, without all the pressure and pretense of most high end eating establishments.

Alligator Soul is known for eclectic Southern dining focusing on sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. Their shrimp and grits feature wild-caught Carolina shrimp sauteed in a white wine lemon butter sauce with creole spices, stone-ground Georgia grits, smoked gouda and bacon, and red onion marmalade. The Pirates' House in Savannah was once the playground for real pirates and wayward travelers.

A full day of enjoying the historic quarter meant that we had to schedule a late 9:45 dinner at Alligator Soul. Its underground setting was once a grain warehouse near historic Telfair Square. Opened in 2003, it can lay claim to having the city’s most adventurous menu, from gator egg rolls to exotic selections such as elk, antelope, kangaroo, ostrich, game birds or red deer.

Southern meets fresh and trendy at Alligator Soul, which is located in the historic downtown area. It was first recommended to me by our neighbors and it’s one of the best dining recommendations I’ve ever received. It’s located almost underneath the city and offers an elegant and romantic setting.

You wouldn’t necessarily stumble upon this under-the-radar, subterranean restaurant unless you set out looking for it. Alligator Soul is tucked away on an unassuming side street and doesn’t get as much love as, say, the Olde Pink House. That doesn’t mean you should discount it, not for a second.
