Paula Deen's restaurant remains packed despite recent controversies that have tarnished the celebrity chef's reputation. The popular buffet features an array of classic Deen dishes, including Southern fried chicken, collard greens and gooey butter cakes--items made famous on Paula's now-canceled Food Network shows. Diners who want something a little fancier can order from the menu, which includes a variety of appetizer and main-course selections such as fried green tomatoes, crab cakes and peach barbeque grouper.

This iconic eatery located in a historic building in downtown Savannah was founded in 1996 by none other than the Southern cooking legend herself, Paula Deen. It is one of the best Savannah restaurants and serves up the quintessential Southern comfort food Paula is known for. The family-style menu features down-home classics to share with the table such as the “best ever” Southern fried chicken, slow-roasted pot roast, and classic chicken and dumplings.

After going online and realizing we needed reservations, we quickly secured reservations and started browsing the menu and blog posts to see what we could expect and eat. The two things that we gathered was that we needed to try the fried chicken and buffet was the way to go to try all of the delicious southern home cooking. Even though the Lady and Sons has three stories and can pack a ton of people in her restaurant, I recommend making reservations.

4.0 ★Not a buffet, but still all you can eat, The Lady & Sons is another one of Paula Deen’s restaurants here in Savannah. You might recognize the name from any number of cooking shows and magazines from any time in the last thirty years. Though they followed the trend of removing their buffet service, this “family style” dining situation keeps the food you like most coming until your family can’t eat another bite.

Southern-style lunches and dinners — where deep-fried goods are ubiquitous and the service is impeccable — are all but obligatory for a trip to Savannah, and you can find those at all price points at Soho South Cafe, The Grey, The Public Kitchen & Bar and The Lady & Sons. Get breakfast — might I suggest biscuits and gravy?. — at Clary's Cafe, The Collins Quarter and for vegetarian and vegan fare, The Sentient Bean.

But the only commercial buffet I hit with any regularity is the Lady and Sons in Savannah. The food there (mac and cheese, greens, black-eyed peas, etc.) stands up well to a buffet, and the restaurant is so crowded, with such high turnover, that fried chicken and other more delicate foods are continually being replaced. But that's definitely an exception to the otherwise sorry, sorry world of buffets.
