Reviews Summary

Communion Restaurant & Bar is celebrated for its innovative take on soul food, with many praising the incredible mac and cheese and vibrant atmosphere. While most diners rave about the unique dishes and welcoming vibes, a few have noted issues with service speed and dish saltiness. Despite minor complaints, the restaurant is a highly recommended culinary destination in Seattle.

"I’ve read about this place from food critics and had very high expectations coming here. I was not disappointed, the food was incredible. We tried 5 different dishes and every single one was delicious- everything from the salad to the Mac and cheese! My main was the salmon and shrimp and it was absolutely to die for. It was also such an incredible experience, the interior design of the space is so unique. We sat at the bar and it was comfy and easy to enjoy our time together. And, it was my sister in law’s birthday and they made her experience so special! A birthday dessert was included (lemon pound cake- so good!). I will be coming back here for special occasions in the future!"

Grace Brennan

"Came here to celebrate my birthday and it was a delicious meal. Definitely a few dishes I would come back for.

Favorite dishes were the grilled okra, clams and mussels, dumplings, and chicken wings. The fried catfish was pretty good and a really big portion.

Only off thing was initial greeting. We checked in with the hostess and it took them at least 10 mins to get our seats at the communal table ready when the restaurant was pretty empty."

Michael Ni

"Simply underwhelming.

Our experience was disappointing from start to finish. Despite arriving on time for our reservation, we were left waiting outside for 20 minutes with no explanation — a sign of poor management and disorganization.

Every dish that came out was incredibly salty — to the point where we went through three large bottles of water during the meal. The collard green salad likely contained a fistful full of salt, so was the deviled eggs. It was hard to enjoy the food with us grasping for water after each bite.

Lastly, service was poor and essentially nonexistent. At the start, we asked the host to help get our server’s attention. She said she would — but never followed through. Instead, we watched her return to her tasks and ignore our call for help completely."

An instant Central District classic upon opening in late 2020, this acclaimed Black-owned restaurant dishes up “Seattle soul" in a vibrant setting. Think exquisitely prepared soul food that pays homage to family traditions—fried chicken, mac ‘n’ cheese, greens, and cornbread—alongside creative fare honoring Seattle's multicultural intersections, like the Fried Catfish Po’mi, a mashup of po’boy and bánh mi sandwiches. Don’t miss COMMUNION's overnight-simmered neck-bone stew, thick with lima beans and pork bones meant to be sucked clean of their smoky meat bits; it’s the chef’s mother’s time-perfected recipe.
