Reviews Summary

Lil Red Takeout & Catering is a beloved spot for its exceptional blend of Jamaican and Southern barbecue. Diners rave about the tender oxtails, flavorful brisket, and authentic Jamaican patties. While the food consistently earns high praise, some minor notes on side dish sweetness or drink tartness appear occasionally.

"I don't know how this place has escaped my knowledge for so long! I'm always looking for oxtails and Jamaican patties and this place offers both.
Came in for lunch on a Friday. Tried the oxtail meal with two sides - opted for collard greens and mac & cheese. I think pairing the super tender oxtails with the creamy mac & cheese was a bit of overkill because both were so rich. Would probably go for baked beans or rice to go with the oxtails instead. Regardless, everything I had was super delicious! The meal came with a moist and sweet cornbread muffin, and I also ordered an individual portion pecan pie.
Lastly, I ordered two Jamaican beef patties. Both the beef filling and the crust were just perfect. Thank god I don't have to wait until I visit NYC to get Jamaican patties... I finally found a local place for them."

"I have heard of so many great things about Lil Red's but my first try of the amazing food here was from a corporate event at PitchBook, where Lil Red's catered for us.

Lunch was absolutely delicious! I tried the BBQ chicken and jerk pork, both of which were really good. The meat was tender and flavorful, and had the perfect combination of savory and sweetness.

My personal take on the jerk pork is that a combination of the fatty and lean part tastes the best because it's even juicer and has just the right amount of fat.

A splash of BBQ sauce elevates the flavor profile, but even without the sauce, both types of meat taste great.

Rice & peas was a highlight that I particularly appreciated. The kidney beans make rice that much more flavorful."

"Unreal Jamican/BBQ!!! Nice workers/owner. I absolutely loved this place. Big portions and good prices for BBQ. I will definitely be returning and spreading the good word about lil Red's. Don't forget - the BBQ sauce and jerk sauce were off the charts. Well done, guys. This place is the truth - top tier 👌."

This Columbia City Jamaican spot is not just one of Seattle's best restaurants to begin with—they also serve the best BBQ in town, along with soul food and a menu of specials that work together to make the ultimate comfort meal. Whether your order involves chunks of smokey rib tips to toss back like Skittles or brisket that’s so soft it possesses the ability to fold into an origami meat sculpture, the only wrong move here would be to skip the garlic mashed potatoes or spiced mac and cheese.

Best BBQ in Seattle: Good Local Barbecue Joints to Try Right Now

After trying over 200 barbecue places across the country, esteemed barbecue judge and writer Adrian Miller named Little Red’s one of the 20 best black-owned barbecue joints in the nation in his book Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecue. Lil Red is a mix of owner Erasto “Red” Jackson’s love of barbecue and Leleith’s Jamaican heritage. The burnt ends plus the pork ribs with jerk sauce is the way to go at Red’s, but it’s impossible to not recommend the escovitch fish, curry goat, and the jerk chicken.

BBQ Restaurants in Seattle

Seattle owes Erasto Jackson’s wife a debt of gratitude; her Jamaican roots broadened this talented local’s culinary horizons, and gave rise to one of the city’s most exciting destinations for smoked meat. At his counter service restaurant on Rainier Avenue, exacting barbecue triangulates brilliantly with soul food and the Caribbean nation’s traditions of seafood and jerked meats. It’s nigh impossible to choose when a single menu might offer jerk spareribs, burnt ends, curry goat, smothered pork chops, spot-on brisket, and escovitch fish.

Right here in Seattle, we’ve got one of Miller’s top 20 spots: Lil Red’s Takeout & Catering (which, warning, given the mania for lists combined with the mania for barbecue will likely have quite a wait for the foreseeable future). Erasto “Red” Jackson runs Lil Red’s out of a low-slung building on the busy stretch of Rainier Avenue just north of Columbia City, and contrary to what the name might imply, Red is not lil. “I enjoy feeding people …” Red said last week on the phone.
