Reviews Summary

Saint Bread is celebrated for its creative and delicious baked goods, unique globally-inspired menu, and cozy boatyard ambiance. Many praise the pastries and unique dishes, while some find certain items, like the smash burger, could be improved. Popularity leads to long lines, especially on weekends, and occasional sell-outs of favorite items.

"What a wonderful spot to grab a breakfast sandwich and many other tasty items. Lovely outdoor seating and ordering is very convenient and fast. My favorite was the fried egg sandwich which I had to replace the bun and add sausage/bacon for. I ordered their animal style fries, which were pretty good but I would say it’s a serving size for at least 3 to 4 people. I’d give the breakfast sandwich, a five out of five and fries a four out of five."

"I want to love this place because they do have some incredibly tasty items but I’m always mad when I come here for two reasons. Gripe #1: They’re always out of pastries. Please make more so I can enjoy coming here at noon instead of only at 7:30am. Gripe #2: The smash burger would be incredible if they put a second patty AND the caramelized onions / spicy aioli from their loaded fries on it. But they don’t and it is mid, especially if you waited in line for it :/"

Emily Goble

"Mind blowing baked goods (danish was to die for), good sandwiches (we had a Fried Egg sandwich with extra sausage and mushrooms, and it was good but not great - lacked flavor and sauce, buns were awesome though). Coffee (latte on almond milk) was good (they use Proud Mary beans) - 8/10, matcha was good too 7/10. Lots of seating available. Line is a bit long but moves fast."

The 14 Best Breakfast Sandwiches In Seattle - Seattle

Stumble across Saint Bread and you might think that you’ve fallen through an enchanted portal into a rustic boathouse with stained glass windows in a remote waterfront village. Only instead of buoys and barnacles, this little shed on the University District side of Portage Bay is filled with great brunch food, like the breakfast sandwich on fluffy Japanese melonpan that’s topped with a thin layer of cookie dough before baking. Glory be to this creation, stuffed with jammy-but-not-messy fried eggs and sticky american cheese that fuses to the bacon grease that fuses to the rogue granulated sugar on your fingertips.

20 Best Restaurants in Seattle, From Takeout to Tasting Menus

Perched in an old boatyard on the banks of the Lake Washington Ship Canal at the edge of the University of Washington, the counter-served baked goods, pre-made lunches, and whimsical dinners feel cohesive under the light shining through the stained glass featuring the theoretical figure from which Saint Bread takes its name. All the seating is on the covered, heated, patio, keeping it cozy but rustic. Grad school students come to study over Okinawan cinnamon toast or Scandinavian-style cardamom knots while remote workers come from further afield to meet over rice bowls with fermented veggies.

The stained glass saint, holding wheat in one hand and a Japanese melonpan (bun) in the other, summarizes this eccentric but excellent bakery perched on the shore of the Ship Canal. Scandanavian-style cardamom knots, classic French croissants, and fried egg sandwiches with Thai-style turkey sausage exemplify the breakfast selection here. The grab-and-go counter displays pre-made salads and sandwiches, an equally intriguing array.

Seattle’s best new restaurants, bars and pop-ups of 2021

Taking over an old boathouse tucked behind the UW campus, this bakery and café brought back together a dream team of bakers and gave them the room to do what they do best. Owner Yasuako Saito brought over many from his London Plane team, including Michael Sanders of Plane Bread, whose sourdough represents the platonic ideal that everyone wished they could make at home last year, and Randi Rachlow for her powerful pastry prowess. The menu takes cues from all over, including Japanese cuisine and Scandinavian sweets, creating an eclectic assortment of dishes like teriyaki turnips over toasted farro and a fried egg sandwich with American cheese on melonpan that might just be the best on-the-go breakfast in the city.

50 Best Restaurants in Seattle

Welcome to the church of flour, where the fishes are broiled salmon on rice bowls, the loaves could be Japanese melonpan, yuzu polenta cake, or cardamom croissants, and nothing is sacred. With a blessed canal-side location in a former boat repair shop, this bakery-plus from restaurateur Yasuaki Saito (Tivoli, Post Alley Pizza, and, previously, London Plane) starts with breakfast pastries that take inspiration from France, Scandinavia, and Japan. The rest of the menu is categorized by quantity of sliced bread: look under one for cinnamon-Okinawan sugar toast, two slices includes egg sandwiches and the impressive cheeseburger, and the “No Bread” section includes salads, fries, and okonomiyaki.

The Best Ways to Patio Dine in Seattle

Since its opening, Saint Bread has welcomed a line of people who queue up at the Portage Bay waterfront for the bakery’s unique pastries and breakfast offerings with a Japanese lean. Its open-air patio on the side of the bakery is the primary seating area for those wanting to hunker down with one of Saint Bread’s melon pan, fried-egg sandwiches or an okonomiyaki-style tortilla. On the sweet end, the gochudoodle, a snickerdoodle made with Korean gochujang, and yuzu polenta cake are memorable ways to end the meal.

You might not get pretty boardwalks or sweeping views of the water at this industrial-feel Portage Bay hideaway just off the UW campus, but the lines speak for themselves — the food and funkiness factors are well worth it. A menu based all around bread is enough of a selling point for my family, and that’s exactly what you’ll find at this community cafe and bakery housed in an old boat-building facility. The pastry case tends to sell out, so come early.
