Any discussion of Solvang’s new guard has to start with Peasants Feast. The married couple ownership duo of chef Michael Cherney and general manager Sarah Cherney opened their dream restaurant at perhaps the worst possible time in recent history, April 1, 2020. But against all odds, they succeeded, and a visit to Peasants Feast immediately clarifies how they did—the food is spectacular, and the place is charming as hell.

It may seem impossible to be even more charming than its Solvang surroundings, but peasants FEAST doubles down, and delivers. This daytime-only café from Michael and Sarah Cherney spotlights the seasons on its sandwich-driven menu. There's nothing ho-hum about what's between the bread here.

Chef/owner Michael Cherney helms the craft-food eatery, relying on his serious restaurant industry résumé—with time spent in Michelin-starred kitchens in Los Angeles, at Ortolan, and in Las Vegas, at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon—to turn out signature lunch or dinner items like seasonally-shifting grilled cheese creations, Instagram-famous sandwiches such as their Solvang Hot Chicken, or smash burgers (including a kid-sized version), straight-from-the-farm-stand salads, and family-friendly soups which utilize local, seasonal crops. Can't-miss desserts include house-made ice cream, plus freshly-baked cookies and a family-favorite frozen lime pie.

Chef Rhoda Magbitang oversees a shared-plates, Californian menu that benefits from an on-site garden and live fire cooking.” The MICHELIN Guide has paid increasing attention to the Santa Ynez Valley, adding Bar Le Côte in Los Olivos, and Solvang hotspots Coast Range and peasants FEAST (which earned Bib Gourmand recognition) in 2022. Bell’s Los Alamos became the first Santa Ynez Valley restaurant to earn a coveted MICHELIN Star in 2021, and First & Oak in Solvang was the first Santa Ynez Valley restaurant to be included in the California Guide when it was awarded a MICHELIN Plate in 2019.

Opened in April 2020, Peasants Feast is a family-owned restaurant with a solid pedigree. Executive Chef and Owner Michael Cherney worked under Chef Christophe Eme and Chef Joel Robuchon before moving to Santa Ynez where he worked at Sides Hardware and Shoes in Los Olivos, Cat Cora’s Mesa Burger, and Firestone Walker Brewing Company before launching Peasant Feast with his wife Sarah Cherney who has worked front-of-house for more than 25 years. At Peasants Feast, the seasonal menu features new American comfort food.

CHOMP | Burgers, Fries, Shakes and brekkies by CHOMP, Paula’s Pancake House, Craft House At Corque, and peasants FEAST feature kid-pleasing grub and/or dedicated kids’ menus, while those in noodle phases, and pizza-eaters, head for Ramen Kotori, Toscana Italian Restaurant, Cecco Ristorante, or Tower Pizza. Find “hot dogs” for the kids, beer for the ‘rents, at Copenhagen Sausage Garden, and locally-loved pretzels at Old Danish Food Farm / Fudge Kitchen.

One of the newest eateries in town (2020), peasants FEAST has already become one of the best restaurants for lunch in Solvang. Another one of the Solvang Michelin Restaurants, the stylish outdoor seating area will catch your eye from the village streets and invite you in for a bite. The menu is the perfect marriage of Californian and Greek cuisine, featuring menu items like sandwiches, tacos and salads.

Peasants FEAST: Recently added to Michelin’s California Guide and awarded the Bib Gourmand recognition, peasants FEAST has become a flagship culinary experience in the heart of Solvang. Now owners Michael and Sarah Cherney have added dinner service. And it’s a welcome take on the seasonal, farm-to-table comfort food that had already established peasants FEAST as a favorite.

We recognized Peasants Deli as the only restaurant in California’s Central Coast to be awarded a Bib Gourmand designation in the 2022 Michelin Guide. But directly across the lane, hospitality industry duo Chef Michael Cherney and his wife Sarah Cherney, soft-opened their first full-service Santa Ynez Valley restaurant, Peasants Feast, early-pandemic in 2020.

Up until very recently, one of the very top restaurants in Santa Barbara County — the Michelin Bib Gourmand–recognized Peasants Feast — was only open for lunch. Lucky for us, the three-year-old restaurant, which opened to great acclaim at the height of the pandemic restrictions, now offers dinner service Thursdays through Saturdays.

The Santa Ynez Valley is now home to two more MICHELIN-rated restaurants after Bar Le Côte in Los Olivos and peasants FEAST in Solvang were recently added to the MICHELIN Guide California. Bar Le Côte and peasants FEAST were among the 37 “New” restaurants to be added to the MICHELIN Guide California.

[lunch, American, casual, “foodie” spot, house-made desserts]. if there’s one restaurant in Solvang sure to please EVERYONE, it’s peasants FEAST. There isn’t a single thing on the menu they didn’t totally nail, but that smash burger and their frozen key lime pie are worth the drive to Solvang alone.

Peasants Feast opened in 2020 and is another Solvang mom-and-pop success story. Chef-owner Michael Cherney trained under the multi-Michelin-starred chef Joel Robuchon at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand. His wife and co-owner, Sarah, runs the front of the house.

This easygoing veg-leaning cafe is on the more luxurious-end (heck, caviar is on the menu). And plates, whilst generous, are still sized for one. That being said, Peasants Feast makes good, community-centered meals well-worth its Bib Gourmand status.

For smorgasbord – Danish food served buffet style – the Red Viking Restaurant gets rave reviews, while newcomer Peasants Feast is a clever choice for seasonal, farm-inspired dining. They also have an extensive local wine list.
