What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ramen Kotori is praised for serving some of the best ramen in California, with highlights like the rich Jiro Ramen and flavorful pork belly. Diners appreciate the cozy outdoor seating and friendly staff, though some have noted long wait times during peak seasons and occasional inconsistencies in broth depth or dish execution. It's considered a must-try deviation from Solvang's traditional Danish fare for those seeking delicious Japanese cuisine.
"Great ramen in Solvang. Honestly, it was one of the few good spots where we can get delicious meal in this touristy area. However, during the holiday season, the wait time was insane. We waited around 1 hour and a half, can be more than that but we lost track of time. Recommend you join their waitlist first and then start the sightseeing after. We did the same after we saw their waitlist.
We ordered one Gyoza, 2 shoyu ramen and 2 spicy tan tan ramen, and one kid ramen. The food was really worth the wait. Warm tasty broth soothed the stomach during winter time. Extremely flavorful ramen. The gyoza can be a bit mediocre though."

"We had the best lunch today at Ramen Katori. We come here often and are never disappointed. The Bao buns are a must to try… today I tried the A-5 Wagyu Ramen special, wow! it was SO delicious, the Wagyu was melt in my mouth, so good, best I have ever had. Great people there as well, Junior and the whole staff are awesome."

"Great tan-tan ramen. Wish there were more chunks of meat, but the broth was good. Also had the pork bun, very tasty. It's all outdoor seating, on the day I came, it was 90+ in the shade so I was dying. Staff was great!"

Seeking Serious Eats in Solvang
In a year of eating too much around the hemisphere, from opulent $500 dinners in Montecito to wood-fired tlayudas in Oaxaca, I found lunch at Ramen Kotori to be my most simultaneously delicious and educational meal of 2019. (Okay, well, n/naka might have the slight edge, but for almost 10 times the price.) I’m not even talking about the ramen — which was satisfyingly rich and appealingly exotic yet familiar — but the first round of dishes that I shared with hospitality legend Budi Kazali, who co-owns this small shop with his former employee Francisco Velazquez and his Kyoto-raised wife, Ikuko “Erica” Velazquez. There were pickled vegetables, fascinating for both the pickling style and the farm-fresh veggies selected; hand-rolled, scallion-topped pork and cabbage gyoza, like fluffy meat pillows of joy; fried chicken karaage with spicy mayo (might as well call it “ karaage all-day”); and light-as-air vegetable tempura, crisply coated yet still snappy inside.

Santa Ynez Valley local Francisco Velasquez fell in love with cooking during high school while working under chef-owner Budi Kazali at the Ballard Inn and Restaurant. Velasquez’s culinary journey then took him to Napa, where he moved up the ladder at the Michelin-starred La Toque restaurant along with his Kyoto-born partner, Erica, a chef who is now his wife. In 2019, with the backing of now-retired chef Kazali, they opened Ramen Kotori in Solvang.

The 15 Best Gluten-Free Lunch Spots in Solvang
While I don’t think it’s as exceptional as some other ramens I’ve had in my life (I feel like it was missing some depth to the broth, and the soy egg could’ve been even more infused), it really did hit the spot on a cold evening. The other great positive about this place is their ability to do gluten free noodles for one of the ramen dishes!
