Cafe La Haye is an upscale French bistro with a very romantic atmosphere of candlelight, white tablecloths, and dim-but-warm lighting that would make a rom-com director proud. The menu is all about simple yet beautiful ingredients prepared just right, like filet mignon with local Point Reyes blue cheese or Duroc heritage pork chop with mustard seed vinaigrette, mushrooms, and potatoes. Their daily specials always use whatever is in season, with a French twist on local ingredients.

Cafe La Haye has been a Sonoma staple in the town square for 15 years, and has also been a ‘top 100’ restaurant selection for many food reviewers. The produce is local and organic with nearly every dish determined by the fresh, seasonable vegetables available. This 32-seat restaurant is minimalist with large windows allowing copious streams of Californian sunshine to shine through.

Start with the exceptional, delicately house-smoked salmon placed on a savory crispy pancake made of shredded spring onions, carrots bits and perfectly correct seasonings and served with a dollop of creme fraiche.

Initially, I hesitated to bring my kids here because of the intimate setting and the fact that it’s only open for dinner. However, the hospitality and thoughtful touches—like an off-menu meal for my son—made the evening enjoyable for us all.

All though the menu is small, you won’t be disappointed with the options, giving you the best of what Sonoma County has to offer.
