Calaveras County (and the Sierra Foothills American Viticultural Area) is a growing region for hearty Spanish and Italian varietals like Barbera, Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Nebbiolo, Grenache, Graciano, Albarino, Marsanne, Verdelho and Symphony — as well as old-vine Zinfandels, robust Cabernet and Petite Sirah. Home to family vineyards ranging in size from a few acres to 80, there are more than 30 family-owned and -operated boutique wineries in Murphys. All of them welcome visitors year-round and many have tasting rooms right on Main Street, easy strolling distance of one another.

Cold pints, live music six nights a week, 10 big-screen TVs, Guinness beer and Irish coffee capped in clouds of homemade cream … this Sonoma square joint has everything a proper pub needs. Murphy’s also beckons with hearty dishes from the Emerald Isle, like Irish stew stocked with lamb, shepherd’s pie smothered in Irish cheddar, corned beef and cabbage, and bangers and mash. There is fancier fare, too, like luscious lamb strips plated with escarole, beets, grapes, apples, gorgonzola cheese and watermelon radish.

For both indoor and outdoor performances by mostly local musicians, check out the HopMonk Tavern and Murphy’s Irish Pub in downtown Sonoma, and Palooza Gastropub & Brewery. All have a fabulous, regular rotation of live music that’s great to drop in and see while you eat or grab a drink—both on weeknights and weekends, both indoors and outdoors offerings for each venue. All venues offer shady patios to escape the Sonoma sun and cozy, indoor spaces to get you up close and personal with the musicians.

For a more casual vibe, I loved heading to Murphy’s Irish Pub. This lively pub offers a classic Irish pub experience, complete with dark wood paneling, Guinness on tap, and friendly bartenders. They also have outdoor seating, which I really enjoyed since the weather was perfect when I visited.

The Murphys Hotel on Main Street, where John Muir once stayed, is one of the few buildings remaining from when the Calaveras County community was a boomtown.

Murphy's Irish Pub & Restaurant is most popular around 8 PM on Fridays. Visitors usually stay up to 2,5 hours here. It's most quiet on Tuesdays.
