What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about the stunning and unique ambiance of Cafe Alcazar, located in the historic indoor swimming pool of the Lightner Museum. Many highlight the exceptional service provided by attentive and friendly staff. While the food is generally well-received, particularly the escargot and panini, some guests find certain dishes to be average or overpriced, and service can occasionally be slow during peak times.
"We had a fantastic experience at the Alcazar Café in St. Augustine. The setting alone is incredible—you're dining in what used to be a historic indoor swimming pool, surrounded by beautiful architecture and images of the hotel’s past. What made the visit truly exceptional, though, was our server, Sean (I hope I’m spelling that right). He was everything you’d want in a server: friendly, attentive, kind, and genuinely helpful. He went above and beyond for us, and his service alone makes me want to come back. The food was very, very good—I'd give it a 9 out of 10. Not the absolute best I've ever had, but when paired with the outstanding service and unique atmosphere, it made for an unforgettable outing. Highly recommend!"

"Went for lunch. Definitely get a reservation(we had one). The service was sub par. There are only about 10 tables and 3 servers. It took at least 5 minutes for our server to greet us and get drinks. I was super put off my how dirty/ stained our server’s hands were- paint perhaps? The menu is limited. The food was ok- nothing to write home about- except the escargot. That was great! The rice was pretty bad- avoid. Being in the pool was pretty cool but it would have been neat if the server had maybe given us some history. The piano player was top notch tho- it WOULD make a cool venue for a wedding or something.
All in all- I would take people to SEE the pool cafe, but not eat there."

"Some friends recommended this place for it's unique setting as it was once an old swimming pool. We ordered the combo lunches. I got the turkey, bacon, avacado with the Greek salad. Mine was excellent in every was. Fresh, tasty, olives were tart and honey mustard dressing was nice.
My wife ordered the chicken club and the soup of the day, tomatoes bisque. She said both were tasty but the chicken was very chewy. Very nice restaurant and would come again."

It is a small restaurant located in what was once the deep end of the world's largest indoor swimming pool, now the Lightener Museum building. Afternoon Tea in St. Augustine, Florida
The tea required reservations, and we were very fortunate that someone working there took pity on us and added a table, as they were technically booked when we tried making reservations. The cafe is in what used to be the pool of Flagler's second huge hotel in St. Augustine, and is now the center of the Lightner Museum. Tea started with a soup or salad course along with iced tea, while they took our hot tea orders (pretty smart, I thought!).

This restaurant has one of the most unique locations in all of St. Augustine. The Cafe Alcazar is located inside the Lightner Museum, which is already interesting enough—but, to make it even more special, the cafe is actually located on the bottom of the former hotel’s swimming pool!. Before the Lightner Museum was a museum, it was the Hotel Alcazar, which was known for its luxury and unusual amenities, one of which was a huge swimming pool.

By 1886, one of Flagler’s railroad lines linked the city to the rest of the east coast, and in 1887, his company began construction on two large, ornate hotels, the Ponce de Leon and the Alcazar. Flagler also purchased a third hotel, the Cordova, renaming it Casa Monica. The massive hotels not only attracted a huge tourist industry, but also brought a new wave of Moorish and Spanish Revival styling to St. Augustine.
