Wild Child

Right now, it’s St. Pete’s best neighborhood for restaurants, where you’ll find tables perpetually packed at the New American Wild Child and the Greek-inspired Baba.

One of St. Pete’s hottest new restaurants to open in the last few years, Wild Child’s creative jungle-meets-ocean food and cocktail menu delivers big time on the brunch side. They have standards like avocado toast, pancakes and French toast, sure. But adventurous eaters rave about the tuna tostada, the potato latkes (add salmon roe – trust us), the Spanish tortilla and the Korean fried chicken sandwich, which is also a favorite on the dinner menu.

This trendy bistro draws crowds with its creative menu and colorful setting. Helmed by Chef Rob Reinsmith, who beat Bobby Flay with his corn empanadas, Wild Child is a perfect choice for foodies who dig al fresco dining—the majority of seating is outdoors. There’s a tropical-themed outdoor patio with a large bar, and a second-floor, street-facing patio—both ideal venues for noshing on jerk octopus and other inventive bites.

In an August episode of “Beat Bobby Flay” on the Food Network, the executive chef of Wild Child in St. Pete first dispensed with another chef in a battle over mahi mahi, then took on celeb chef Flay using Reinsmith’s chosen dish, corn empanadas. The show is edited to heighten tension, so of course the cook-off seemed neck-in-neck. In the end, the judges of the blind taste test chose Reinsmith’s version.

The chances of the team behind Wild Child doing any wrong were low. The chances of them exceeding my expectations by such a massive margin were even lower – but they sure pulled it off. Right next to Wild Child’s peachy, eclectic walls on Central Avenue, you’ll find the dark, dusky dining room of Slim Charmer, a new cocktail bar and tasting parlor by same the minds that created its neighbor.

If you’re wondering where to eat in St Petersburg that’s fun and creative with a nice atmosphere, then Wild Child is the spot to go to. The menu changes seasonally, and one of my favorite evenings was when I had the jerk octopus over a scallion crema and snapper a la plancha with a paella style rice that had Spanish chorizo and crab in it.

Wild Child is a funky St. Pete spot that serves up vibrant dishes in an equally colorful setting that’ll have you snapping pics before your first bite. Their short rib eggs Benedict special is the kind of dish you’ll rave about for weeks, and the potato latkes?. Total scene-stealers.
