Reviews Summary

ANELLO is celebrated for its exceptional wood-fired sourdough pizzas with creative toppings and a perfectly charred crust. Diners also rave about the unique appetizers and desserts, all served in a cozy, minimalist-chic atmosphere. While the intimate space and the need for reservations are common points, the overall dining experience is consistently praised as a fine dining affair, making it a must-visit in Tucson.

"As always, solid entry’s by the Anello team! If you’re planning on heading here, give them 24 hrs or so for reservations or grab a pizza or two at the alley window and head over to the brewery across the ally for some beers! Come early, they sold out of pizza dough(s) on Saturday night by 7pm…."

"ANELLO was great. The space is very small but cozy. There’s no true sign so look for the red light. You should make a reservation however they have a good deal with Crooked Teeth(a bar next door) where you can get it delivered to eat there. The pizza was wonderful if lacking a little undercarriage. The parsley purée on the Verde was awesome. Sourdough pizza is always nice."

"This restaurant came recommended by a fellow pizza connoisseur and it was nothing short of a fine dining experience. The location is fairly unmarked outside and once you step inside it feels like a little slice of modern minimalist Europe right in Tucson. We ordered one of everything from from “Bites” menu, 3 pizzas and the blue corn lemon tart. All the dough here is sour dough and baked in a wood burning oven, which gives it a unique soft, chewy, pillowy yet crunchy texture. Flat bread had this sweet chili sauce poured on it which was the most amazing pairing. All the food was presented with great detail and remarkable. Lemon tart was worth finishing with as well."

Elsewhere, try Scott Girod’s wood-fired pizzas at Anello, largely considered by many to be the best pie purveyor in town. Girod was a protege of Chris Bianco, one of the country’s most celebrated pizza makers, and here, his Neapolitan-style creations are flavored with very Italian ingredients like guanciale and pistachio. There are a couple of other contenders for the people’s affections, including the newer operations at Penelope, where pizzas are unexpectedly drizzled with a tasty sauce: ranch, balsamic glaze, hot sauce, etc.

Chef-owner Scott Girod, who’s from Gilbert, worked under Chris Bianco at Pizzeria Bianco, and also spent time in Italy as a pizzaiolo before opening Anello in Tucson’s Warehouse Arts District in 2017. But his pizza is all Tucson, built on naturally leavened dough that’s fermented over 30 hours, and wood-fired with Arizona’s native mesquite wood to a charred, bubbly finish. There are only four regular pizzas on the menu, including the Bianca with fresh mozzarella, ricotta, garlic, basil and local chiltepin peppers; and the Verde with smoked mozzarella, parsley puree and pistachios.

14 of the Best Tucson Restaurants to Check Out

Gilbert native and Pizzeria Bianco alum Scott Girard transformed a former gallery just north of downtown into one of the top-rated dining experiences in southern Arizona. There’s no sign on the building, but you can’t miss the aroma of wood-fired dough, its crusts charred and bubbled, topped with fragrant sauce and melty cheese. The minimalist space, anchored by a bulbous pizza oven, matches the sparse menu—just four pizzas and three each of bites and sweets.
