History and delicious food go hand in hand here in Tucson. 🌵 El Charro Café opened its doors in 1922, and ever since, it’s been serving signature dishes like carne seca (sun-dried on the roof!) and the famous chimichanga. As the oldest Mexican restaurant in the U.S. still operated by the same family, El Charro Café is a true Tucson treasure and a must-try while you’re in the home of America's best...

Reviews Summary

Diners rave about El Charro Cafe's rich history and authentic Sonoran-style Mexican cuisine, with particular praise for the legendary chimichangas and famous carne seca. The vibrant atmosphere and friendly service contribute to a memorable experience, though some reviews mention long wait times and inconsistency in certain dishes. Overall, it's a highly recommended Tucson institution for those seeking a taste of tradition.

"I haven't been here in a while and my cousins, who were visiting, wanted to go here. I work at a major hotel nearby and suggest this place all the time, but I forgot how AMAZING the food was here! We were sat in the downstairs area and loved the vibe down there. How the servers manage those stairs with food is a wonder in itself!! I had the seafood enchiladas which were the best I've ever had! I've been thinking of them ever since!!Everyone thought their food was just delicious. Server was awesome and very knowledgeable about the food when we had questions. I can't wait to go back!!"

"Recommend: chimichanga
Good: tamales, tacos, fajitas

I think my expectations were a bit too high.

The food was good especially when you consider the price. I was surprised to find the prices so reasonable. The complementary chips and salsa were both lovely.

The chimichangas were nice though the chicken ones were dry. The coloring book for kids has the story of the origins of chimichanga

I found the tamales and beans a little on the runny/mushy/wet side. I didn't love the corn kernels in the tamales - they tasted a little like canned corn to me. The shrimp were cooked nicely though.

Tacos were solid

We waited a pretty long time for our food so I would definitely recommend getting an appetizer or two so that you're not miserable."

"Paid parking or limited side street parking read signs posted for hours. Long wait on Saturday afternoon about 2pm. Nice sitting areas while you wait. Lovely interior, clean nice decor. In a touristy area which equals pricey menu. Food was decent, ok hot sauce but it came in a teeny dip cup, which lasted thru about 10 chips, never got or offered a refill. Husband would have liked hotter sauce. Had steak fajitas w queso enchilada. Fajitas were served with corn tortillas, didn’t ask us if we preferred flour and none were offered. Sat us right next to kitchen squeezed in tight at a table we could barely get to the one chair…and we aren’t big ppl. We had good service by our waiter. We might go back, the vibe was fun but probably try some place different next time."

311 N Court AveThe famed Mexican joint El Charro Café is the oldest operating family resto in the States, and it's been serving up authentic Mexican cuisine since 1922. The family of restaurateurs opened up a handful of other locations operating under the same name, but if you’re looking for the real deal, and a chimichanga the size of your face, find yourself a table at El Charro’s Downtown Tucson spot. The famous carne seca, a special type of spiced beef that’s prepared on location, is stuffed inside most of the cheese-heavy entrees.

Is Tucson the best city for Mexican food in the US?

Arizona Highways

The Mexican Food Capital of the World and Elsewhere

Mexican food has always been a staple of life and an attraction in Tucson — the city’s oldest restaurant, El Charro, was founded exactly 100 years ago and remains in the original family today — but the hype has intensified over the past several decades. In 1987, Mayor Lew Murphy proclaimed Tucson “The Mexican Food Capital of the World and Elsewhere.” This provoked a challenge from other cities in the American Southwest and led to a cookoff judged by actual Mexicans, which Santa Fe, New Mexico, won. Murphy’s silly boast, though, floated free from its source and wafted spore-like into the desert air, becoming a kind of self-propagating slogan.

El Charro is a Tucson institution, and the oldest Mexican restaurant in the USA that has been continuously run by the same family. This place can be super busy so I would highly recommend making a reservation, going for an early dinner to avoid the rush, or be prepared to wait. They have a big menu with so many delicious options, but one of the main things they are known is machaca (strips of beef steak sun-dried, shredded and then reconstituted with chilies, tomatoes and onions).

El Charro is the longest-operating family-run Mexican restaurant in all of the United States, bright and plucky with spirit, loud-and-proud traditional colors, and natural sunlight. And just as historically significant, it's been run by two women: founder Monica Flin, who returned to Tucson from Mexico to open El Charro Café, and her grand-niece Carlotta Flores, an L.A. catering veteran who returned to turn it into a Tucson restaurant empire.
