Monkeypod in Whalers Village, is Monkeypod’s second location on Maui and is part of Peter Merriman’s restaurant group which includes various Merriman’s and Moku Kitchen on Oahu. Their vegan options include coco corn chowder, avocado & cucumber salad (my favorite), all other salads can be made vegan, and a variety of sides which can be made vegan. Their vegetarian fare includes kale and mushroom gnocchi which is a pretty solid veggie entree from a non-vegetarian restaurant, but my other personal favorite is the pumpkin ravioli from the appetizer menu.

With locations in both Wailea and Kāʻanapali Beach, Monkeypod Kitchen is the rare crowd-pleaser with equal acclaim from tourists and locals alike. The Whalers Village outpost in particular, nestled amidst a sea of shops, is perpetually bustling with customers visiting for some of Maui's most acclaimed Mai Tais, fish tacos, and nautical delights. Be sure not to miss the exemplary Monkeypod Mai Tai, made with two kinds of rum, lime, house-made macadamia nut orgeat, orange curaçao, and a fluffy cloud of silken honey-lilikoi foam.

My husband ordered Pete’s Fresh Fish & Chips, which featured day boat, troll-line caught mahi mahi tempura style with a malt vinegar aioli.

This was one of those places we visited last time we were on the island and knew we wanted to come back – if for their mai tai topped with lilikoi foam alone!. We made reservations during their happy hour to be able to take advantage of their happy hour menu pricing. I highly suggest reservations at least a couple days in advance -I overheard someone put their name in and the hostess telling them it would be a 1.5-2 hour wait!!

During a visit to Lahina, I just loved Star Noodle and certainly not for the location in an industrial park on the edge of town.

If there’s one thing you’re going to want to do in Wailea, it’s hit happy hour at the Monkeypod. Now I will preface this by saying that there’s now a Monkeypod in Ka’anapali at Whalers Village and that one has ocean views so if you’re staying on the west side then I would probably hit that one instead, but the Monkeypod in Wailea is the original and it’s pretty much my favorite restaurant in Hawaii.

And Mama's is always a great right-before-you-get-on-the-plane late lunch/early dinner.

After visiting the Monkeypod in Kihei years ago, we were very excited when a location opened up at Whaler’s Village near us. The beachside location is beautiful, the tropical drinks are fun, and the food is pretty tasty. They don’t take reservations, so put in your name and wander down the beach boardwalk for an hour or so until they text you that your table is ready.

We booked a reservation six months in advance, the earliest date possible to secure our 4pm happy hour time slot. The whole restaurant can choose from the happy hour menu, not just at the bar.

I do agree, it was my favorite drink of the trip and was strong (albeit the most expensive drinks we enjoyed during the trip, even with HH pricing – regular price is $15). We shared a Kalua Pork & Pineapple Pizza (only $10 at HH) with our drinks.

I need to give this to MonkeyPod which is a more casual restaurant, also from chef Peter Merriman. There are locations in Wailea as well as in Whaler's Village, Ka'anapali Beach. It's the same Mai Tai I mentioned above from Merriman's, there's something about that Lilikoi Foam that really sets it over the edge.

Monkeypod Kitchen actually has two locations on the Island of Maui. One is oceanfront at Whalers Village in Kaanapali, and one is located at the Wailea Gateway Center. Both offer an amazing brunch menu, and incredible mid-day libations.

Monkeypod Kitchen has a good bar and Mai Tai but we don't think much of the food. The Kaanapali Beach Hotel opened up a new restaurant a couple years ago called Huihui which is very good for both lunch and dinner and has ocean views.

Monkeypod Kitchen is a MUST, their mai tais are my favorite on the island (food is fantastic too)!. We also really liked Lineage (Top Chef, Sheldon Simeon’s restaurant), conveniently located in The Shops at Wailea shopping center.
