What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Komi offers an exceptional, intimate dining experience with adventurous Mediterranean-inspired dishes and passionate service. While praised for its unique flavors and homemade treats like ice cream and pita, some find the tasting menu portions small relative to the high cost, making it best suited for special occasions.
"An incredible intimate dinning experience with some of the most passionate and animated descriptions of wine I've ever heard. So make sure you get the matching wines!
Delicious adaptions of Mediterranean flavors with excellent (and friendly) service that makes Komi an unforgettable experience."

"Friendly staff and nice walk up experience. I ordered a grandpa pepperoni slice, which included some unexpected jalapeño, that was delicious. While I waited for the slice, I got a chance to try two of the ice cream flavors from the cart out front - my favorite was Basque Cheesecake, but they alternate flavors, so whatever they have when you go will probably be tasty (even when it’s cold out)"

"I love this place. If you'd have told me right before the pandemic that one of the best haute cuisine restaurants in DC (Komi) would soon change its menu to pizza, gyros, and fries and I'd love it, I'd have said you were crazy. But here we are. They also sell their own ice cream, and it's delicious. Expensive, but so good nothing else compares.
Happy Gyro's menu is short and changes frequently, based on what's available. The veggie gyro is fantastic but they haven't had that for a couple months. The spicy veggie tacos come in those old fashioned hard tortillas, and are delicious - but pretty spicy. Grandma and grandpa pizza squares taste as good as you'll find in NYC. They still offer the extensive wine and drink selection as they did when they were Komi. The chef and staff are all from Komi too, and provide very good service to match fine dining or street food.
Now that the pandemic is supposedly over, I don't know if they'll go back to fancy dining. Right now, everything is mostly carryout and the inside dining is closed. But I like both Komi and Happy Gyro, and the latter is much less expensive.
As of a few months ago, I think, the inside has been reopened! Not for dining, but for picking up your food and drinks. It looks nice! You can browse the wines, beers and ciders."

American restaurants in Washington, DC—from cafés to steakhouses
Johnny Monis is gathering quite a following for himself in his tiny Dupont Circle restaurant. Komi’s low-key dining room, a straight shot from front window to kitchen window, is home to some of the most adventurous eating in the city; the youthful chef is essaying New American cuisine with nods to his Mediterranean heritage and whatever else strikes his fancy. But neither he nor his staff of personable, fashionable servers is lacking in discipline; just as his talent is for showcasing unusual ingredients without showboating, theirs is for putting guests at ease with the ever-changing menu.

The menu of pizzas and sandwiches looks a lot different, but the homemade, ethereal pita breads that accompanied every Komi feast can be ordered as gyro sandwiches (we love the vegetarian and lamb) or solo to start the meal (go ahead and splurge on the barrel-aged feta with it). finally, can anyone confirm that Komi has a vegetarian menu?. i've tried calling them twice to ask if it was possible to dine there if you were vegetarian (though admittedly the last time i called was over a year ago) and both times the person answering the phone said something to the effect that they didn't have vegetarian options for people who don't eat seafood.
