Reviews Summary

Unconventional Diner is praised for its creative comfort food and award-winning brunch, with highlights like chicken and waffles and blueberry lavender pancakes. Diners appreciate the unique flavor combinations and the industrial-modern vibe. While most reviews are glowing, some find the menu a bit too unconventional for conservative palates, and a service charge is automatically added.

"The Unconventional Diner is truly one of a kind. I had the chance to eat there while visiting DC, and in just 48 hours, I went back four times. The pancakes, double cheeseburger, S’Eggs’Y Sandwich, and French toast were all incredible.

Today, fifteen of us came in for a meal, and once again, the food, service, and atmosphere were all outstanding. Huge thanks to Filip, Paola, and Carlos, who went out of their way to make the experience unforgettable for me and my family.

Whether you’re stopping in solo or coming with a big group, you can count on consistently great food and service."

Paul Ayoub

"Unconventional Diner in the Shaw neighbourhood of Washington D.C., was easily a memorable meal during our trip. I am always scouting for places with character, and UD didn’t disappoint.

We visited for lunch and sat outside for the meal, and also appreciated how attentive our servers(first Dominique and then another server—sorry forgot her name)were. They checked on us frequently and tried their best.

For food, we got:

Chicken and Waffles: The cornbread waffle with juicy chicken on top was a great way to satisfy our hungry stomachs.

Lebanese Fried Rice: The rice was quite flavorful, and the grilled chicken on the side was perfectly cooked as well. The sunny side up egg on the rice went well too!

I wasn’t a big fan of their Hibiscus Citrus drink considering how one-dimensional it tasted, but that was a tiny not-so-great part of the overall meal. The carrot cake for dessert was a sweet delight to conclude the meal.

Overall, we appreciated the creative twists that Unconventional Diner offered, and their prompt and wonderful service. They add 20 percent service charge to the bill, and parking that’s available is street parking.

Seating is available both inside and outside. Restrooms are available inside too."

Akshat Kumar

"Breakfast so delicious that we had to keep coming back for more. Although not explicitly on the menu as a single meal, we were able to order what we were after, which was a buttermilk pancakes with blueberry crunch topping and a side of protein rich fluffy and very tasty scrambled eggs. Service was excellent and they clearly disclosed they automatically add a 20% service charge on the bill, which they worked hard to earn. We'll be back next time we are in the D.C. area."

The Best Brunch Spots in Washington, D.C., From Classic Diners to a Viet-Cajun Cafe

Chef David Deshaies encourages guests to get messy as they tackle the pile of bread, avocado, confit egg yolk, pickled fresno chiles, lime, and cilantro. Deshaies similarly puts his own creative spin on think-you-know it diner entrees, like chicken and waffles with habanero butter or Caribbean-style shrimp and grits with Pineapple-Habanero Sauce. The crowd is a cross between business travelers drawn to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and Instagrammers, who know that a selfie in front of Unconventional Diner's murals will rack up the likes.

Yes, Unconventional Diner's dishes are as comforting and inviting as the plates you'd find at any greasy spoon and the portions are huge—but they're leagues more interesting and satisfying. Each dish that leaves the kitchen includes fresh ingredients and surprising flavors, which elevate each one to heavenly heights. Nosh on Caribbean Shrimp and Grits, breakfast biscuits loaded with housemade sausage, bacon jam, fried eggs and hashbrowns or fried eggs with brussels sprouts and tikka masala.

Brunch is served every day of the week until 3:45 at this eclectic Shaw spot. Warming sweet-potato shakshuka nods to North Africa, while shrimp and grits gets a pineappley Caribbean spin.
