In 2020, the long-awaited Palm Beach outpost of a classic French restaurant on New York's Upper East Side opened its doors to South Florida diners. The original La Goulue made its mark when it opened in 1973 on 70th Street in Manhattan, although it has since moved. Created by restaurateur Jean Denoyer, the chic bistro serves meticulously prepared French fare, including its award-winning favorite, Le Soufflé au Fromage, a simple but decadent alchemy of Gruyère and parmesan cheeses, whisked egg whites, butter, milk, and flour that bakes into a light and airy puff.

There were whoops of delight when La Goulue, the clubby French bistro on the Upper East Side, opened its Palm Beach iteration in 2020. Situated on the best corner of Palm Beach — Royal Palm and South County — everything is reassuringly the same (as the Parisian restaurateur Jean Denoyer commented at the time, “Looks like La Goulue, tastes like La Goulue”), including the froggy-green matchbooks, the interiors reminiscent of a Toulouse-Lautrec painting, and the delicious Franco-American food.

La Goulue, a celebrated gourmet establishment in Palm Beach, extends the legacy of its iconic Manhattan sister restaurant, offering an immersive French culinary experience. The restaurant evokes the elegance of the early 1900s, reminiscent of a Parisian bistro, complete with signature banquette seating, Majorelle chandeliers, and rich wood paneling. Located in the landmarked Palm Way Building, the restaurant accommodates over one hundred guests, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

The 10-ounce Black Angus beef burger ($27 at dinner; $25 at lunch and brunch) is topped with Comte cheese, sauteed onions and mushrooms, house sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles and served with fries. “What I especially love about it are the sauteed onions and the brioche bun,” said Palm Beach real estate broker-associate Alison Newton. “You expect quality beef in Palm Beach so the sauteed onions and the brioche bun are qualities that stand out.

Two of Manhattan’s favorite buzzy bistros, transported to the center of Palm Beach Island, are going strong.
