The ghost of Jean Marot still haunts Shields Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg… 👻 From 1708 to 1717, Jean ran a popular tavern (Marot’s Ordinary) on this spot—until he was murdered at just 40 years old. Within an hour, rival tavern keeper Francis Sharpe was arrested. Nine witnesses. A mysterious trial. But the records were lost… Exactly one year later, Sharpe opened his own tavern right across the s...

During our Dead of Night Ghost Tour on June 14th, we were conducting a dowsing rod session outside Shields Tavern when something unexpected happened. A spirit made contact. Not just any spirit—a young woman who seemed to be following one of our guests. At the end of this audio clip, listen very carefully… You can hear her whisper. 👻What do you think she’s saying? Drop what you hear in the comments...

Reviews Summary

Diners praise Shields Tavern for its immersive 18th-century atmosphere and the abundant, delicious family-style 'Groaning Board' meals, especially the fried chicken. While some note that prices can be high and service can feel rushed, the unique historical experience and flavorful food make it a memorable dining destination in Colonial Williamsburg.

"We had lunch at Shields Tavern and the building is truly lovely. The many rooms are decorated in period style, like stepping into the 17th century. The food is a prix fixe, served family style, and is delicious. The fried chicken was great. Service is also very good, friendly and attentive."

Louis and Elaine

"Wow! For $29/person, you get a groaning board menu. Bread to start, then salad, next came the fried chicken and beef roll-ups with mashed potatoes and delicious veggies. Drinks were included: tea or soda. Everything was so wonderful! We didn’t have room for dessert, but that was not included in the price anyway."

Elizabeth Dawes

"Loved the experience of 18th century dining. $76. For two all you can eat, with optional dessert. Of course my husband ate the desert before I could snap a picture."

Cozying up at one of Colonial Williamsburg’s 18th-century taverns — Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, King’s Arms Tavern, or Shields Tavern — is an appropriate way to spend a few hours, particularly in the late fall or winter. Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, "known as one of George Washington’s favorite places to dine," according to Shotwell, serves up a historically inspired menu that includes hoe cakes, chowder, and fried chicken. She adds, "Candlelit rooms with the soft sounds of tavern music complete the dining experience.

The pub crawl begins at Shields Tavern Garden with a tasting of a Shields Tavern colonial-era punch bowl, which is an exceptionally sweet libation meant to be uniquely paired with one of the tavern’s globally-inspired dishes. Shields Tavern offers the Spring Punch Bowl with pineapple-infused rum and flavored brandy with orange and ginger as well as its Wine Punch Bowl with white wine mixed with mango, lemon, sugar and lemongrass. During the 18th century, taverns such as Shields were communal gathering places for townspeople who shared these punch bowls.

Shields has recently expanded its menu and its hours (now open from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.), and because no reservations are accepted here, this is a good option if you decide to drop in unexpectedly. The interior is casual 18th century coffeehouse, and offers quick service. Try the cornmeal-battered buttermilk fried oysters or the Old English favorite ‘Bubble and Squeak’—a concoction of potatoes and cabbage that legend has it is named for the sounds one’s digestive system makes after eating it.
