Reviews Summary

This Hanoi institution is celebrated for its signature beef noodle salad, offering a unique blend of fresh ingredients and savory flavors that locals and tourists adore. While the food is consistently praised for its taste and generous portions, some diners note that the restaurant's cleanliness could be improved, with occasional mentions of floor debris. Despite this, its long-standing reputation and delicious, affordable offerings make it a must-visit spot.

"Unique and refreshing. It's a mix between a salad and noodles, and the ingredients are freshly prepared. We easily finished the large portions (priced at 100k each), and came here multiple times over our visit to Hanoi."

Jonathan Chew

"I’ve been a customer of this restaurant for nearly 20 years. The food is still as delicious as before—the sauce is slightly milder but still very flavorful. The beef is tender and tasty. Service is fast.

The price is 70k for a bowl, extra beef pay 30k more.

However, one issue is that even though there is a large trash tray under the table, the staff should clean the floor and under the tables more frequently. Every time I dine here, I notice napkin trash on the floor and under the tables, which makes it feel like I’m eating on top of the trash."

Khue Ho

"If you are not a Vietnamese and only knows Pho and Banh Mi, let me educate you with my own limited knowledge of this mindblowing dish; beef noodle salad.

Apparently they have it for breakfast, and its a light and refreshing enough to start the day with. There is the crunchiness from the fried onions, then the savory beef and finally the noodles to soak up just a little bit of the broth at the bottom (its considered dry) and give it all a very good mix and boom, energy and flavour bomb to start your day of touring Hanoi!

Oh by the way, the fried pork roll damm good also please. Don't order you don't cry when you go home.

Ngon!"

9 Must-Try Street Foods in Hanoi

Unlike some of the other dishes on this list like bun cha or phò, bun bo nam bo is a noodle dish served with a refreshingly tangy sauce in lieu of a broth. This beef noodle salad consists of strips of marinated beef alongside lettuce and cucumbers, vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, and topped with a mix of fried shallots and crushed peanuts. If you head to Bun Bo Nam Bo and order a bowl, make sure to stir the contents before digging in—the sauce is hiding under the mountain of ingredients.

Restaurants in Hanoi

This venue is spotlessly clean, and despite its popularity with tourists is still very much the real deal. Like all the best restaurants purveying local favorites, this place specializes in one dish only: bun bo nam bo (a southern beef and noodle dish). Translated as "southern style rice noodles with beef," this mixture of vermicelli noodles, beef, lettuce, cucumber, shallots, bean sprouts, cilantro, and chopped peanuts is more commonly found in Ho Chi Minh City.

Best things to do in Hanoi

At Bach Phuong, the bun bo nam bo (beef noodle salad) has sweet flavor influences from the South. Banh Cuon Gia Truyen Thanh Van serves traditional steamed rice-paper rolls with different fillings. You can find bun cha, a popular dish including char-grilled sliced pork belly and meat patties served with herbs and thin rice noodles, basically everywhere in Hanoi; Bun Cha Que Tre and Bun Cha Huong Lien are two of my favorites.

In the lower French Quarter is Quan Bun Cha Huong Lien, which became famous after Anthony Bourdain took Barack Obama there (which is about as much cred as a destination can get). However, some locals insist that the food is pretty uninspiring and you always have to wait in a crazy line to get said uninspiring food. Instead, I recommend Nom Nguyet just down the street.

Grilled Beef Noodle Salad in Hanoi 🍜

This little restaurant has been open since 1986 and is always full and popular with locals and foreigners, their menu is quite small but their main dish is the beef noodle Salad that is just amazing. The place is simple and easy to find, waiters are always busy so don't expect the best service besides the cashier who is usually very polite and speaks good English. I recommend to get some of the side dishes to try them like the steam or fermented pork rolls and the vegetarian dumpling (that is more like a piece of bread) Address - 73-75 Hàng Điếu, Cửa Đông, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội Ambiance/Facilities - small restaurant in the front road, easy to access and several areas for dinning Highlights - Beef noodle Salad Avg.

Bun Bo Nam Bo (Vietnamese: Bún Bò Nam Bộ) is a layered dish featuring vermicelli noodles topped with grilled marinated beef, bean sprouts, lettuce, pickled vegetables, fried onions, and chopped peanuts. The whole dish soaks in a bowl of delicious nước chấm (fish sauce mixed with garlic, chili, sugar, and lime juice). The secret to great Bun Bo Nam Bo is, without a doubt, the marinating and grilling of the strips of beef that take center stage in this classic Vietnamese dish.
