Morning Glory Original

One of of Hội An’s must-visit eateries, presided over by the formidable local restaurant doyenne Ms Vy, this original Morning Glory was opened to showcase everyday Vietnamese food, from traditional and celebratory dishes to comfort foods, workers’ meals, medicinal foods, street foods and snacks. Among the moreish Hội An dishes you might pick at brunch are steamed savoury rice-flour crepes and fresh rice-paper rolls with barbecue pork. It’s open from 10am.

Take a chance to visit Morning Glory; it's highly recommended plenty of Hoi An specialities in one place such as Mi Quang noodles, Vietnamese caramelized fish in a clay pot or the signature squid-stuffed with pork and mushroom.

It is a bit on the upscale side but worth it because the staff is really knowledgeable about gluten and celiac if you ask and show your translation card. I wish we’d just come back here most nights instead of trying to find new gluten free restaurants because I ended up getting sick elsewhere, and this place was by far the safest.

In the ancient city you’ll find plenty of well regarded upscale restaurants offering their take on central Vietnamese cuisine (Morning Glory is the most famous of the lot). But just outside you can take in the city’s specialties the way locals have for generations – on the street for $1-2 a pop. All my recommendations below can be found within about a 15 minute walk of the old town.

While each food is delicious and fresh with impressive flavor, the staffs here are also very lovely and attentive.

Arguably the most famous restaurant in Hoi An, there are actually three Morning Glory, so be sure to seek out the original one. As it is popular, if you know when you want to eat you should pre-book, otherwise going there before 6pm should be good. We ordered one starter and three mains – which is perfect for three people!

Cooking lessons are offered at several restaurants around town. If you enjoyed your meal there, it can't hurt to inquire. There are also several established cooking schools with good reputations including "Rice Drum", "Morning Glory" and "Red Bridge" who offer a variety of courses ranging in price US$16-55.

Order any of the dishes because this place really makes it better than anywhere else!. We particularly enjoyed the smoked eggplant, the fried morning glory, the while grilled snapper, stuffed squid and the seafood soup. There is however no doubt that all the other dishes are just as delicious.

Morning Glory is one of the most popular restaurants in Hoi An. It’s a huge and busy place that seemed touristy, but the food is really good. The vegetarian dishes are described as side dishes, but the portions are quite large and three dishes between us were plenty.

Morning Glory Original is a slightly upscale restaurant in Hoi An known for its exceptional quality and elevated dining experience. Even though it’s a little fancier than other places nearby, the food at Morning Glory Original is really good and worth the money.

The Cargo Club is owned by Miss Vy who also owns Mermaid, the first restaurant in Hoi An selling food to tourists and the infamous Morning Glory which housed her cooking school before Vy’s Market Place Restaurant started up (see previous blog).

Thankfully, I did manage to find a restaurant called Morning Glory in the Old Town that did vegetarian variations of cao lau (a rice noodle dish that Hoi An is famous for) and also had a ton of traditional dishes for my meat-eating family.

Back in Hoi An we went back to Morning Glory for a light lunch. Tried their crispy pancake and two types of noodles, cao lau, a local specialty, and mi quang with seafood. The crispy pancakes are indeed a crispy version of a dense crepe.

A real institution in Hoi An having opened in 2006, today it has grown into one of the most popular spots in the town. A great variety of food including a super local Cau Lau, this restaurant also has so many other Vietnamese classics.

To enjoy Hoi An cuisine in a more refined setting, make your way to Morning Glory Original at 106 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street. This elegant restaurant offers a beautifully refined version of cao lau, with extra greens and enhanced flavors.

On my next trip I would try V’s Market Restaurant at 3 Nguyen Hoang St. and Morning Glory Signature at 41 Nguyen Phuc Chu St. and Morning Glory Original at 106 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street. She has a six other restaurants as well.
