"I tried the fresh super clean cold water on June 29, 2022 and also it has delicious fishes which you may order in the restaurant. Water temperature: 10°C at the surface. I really enjoyed swimming in the lake for a couple of minutes. It's safe to have a camp around the lake and people are very nice here, they were very kind to us after we came back from the Aragats mountaineering program, and in the morning a guy brought us a watermelon !"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Hiking Mount Aragats from Kari Lake

Kari Lake serves as the primary trailhead for ascents of Mount Aragats, Armenia's highest peak. The most accessible route from the lake is to the Southern Peak, which stands at 3,879 meters. This hike is challenging but rewarding, offering incredible panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and other peaks of Aragats. The trail can be rocky and requires good physical condition and proper footwear. Many visitors opt for guided tours or hire local guides for safety and navigation, especially if they are not experienced hikers. Reddit

For those seeking a more adventurous trek, the Northern Peak (4,090m) and Western Peak (4,080m) are also accessible, though these routes are significantly more demanding and typically require overnight stays or very early starts. The Eastern Peak (3,914m) is the least technical but still requires a full day's effort. Regardless of the chosen peak, acclimatization to the altitude at Kari Lake is crucial before embarking on any significant climb. Reddit

When planning your hike, remember that weather conditions at high altitudes can change rapidly. It's advisable to check the forecast and be prepared for wind, rain, or even snow, regardless of the season. Carrying ample water, snacks, and sun protection is essential for a successful and enjoyable mountaineering experience on Mount Aragats. :hiking_boot: Reddit

The Unique Atmosphere of the Soviet Observatory

Adjacent to Kari Lake lies the intriguing abandoned Soviet observatory. This relic of a bygone era adds a unique and somewhat eerie atmosphere to the high-altitude landscape. The stark, utilitarian structures stand in contrast to the natural beauty of the mountains, creating a compelling visual juxtaposition that appeals to photographers and history enthusiasts alike. Reddit

While not an officially maintained tourist site, the observatory's presence offers a glimpse into Armenia's scientific past. Exploring the grounds (with caution, as structures may be unstable) allows visitors to imagine the research and activities that once took place here. The isolation and the remnants of scientific equipment contribute to a feeling of stepping back in time or onto another planet, as some visitors have described. Reddit

This site is particularly popular for its photogenic qualities. The combination of rugged nature and decaying Soviet architecture provides a dramatic backdrop for unique shots. It's a place that sparks curiosity and offers a different perspective on the Aragats region beyond its natural splendor. :camera: Reddit

Culinary Delights at Kari Lake

Forget fancy restaurants; here, the focus is on honest, delicious food prepared with local ingredients. The most celebrated item is the buffalo yogurt, described by visitors as incredibly rich, creamy, and unlike anything found in the city. It's a must-try for anyone visiting the area. Reddit

Many visitors also rave about the fresh fish available, likely sourced from nearby waters or local farms. Homemade compotes and other traditional beverages complement the meals perfectly. Reddit
