Reviews Summary
Altona Memorial Park is a place of beauty and serenity for many, with well-kept rose gardens and peaceful memorial areas. However, visitors frequently cite challenges with navigation due to uneven terrain and lack of paths, as well as concerns about weed infestation and occasional theft of grave items. Some also report varying levels of staff helpfulness and distress over policy changes regarding grave decorations.
"I went to visit a grave armed with all the details of the lawn name, the row no., the grave no. & of course the full details of my relative. I attended the office first then headed out to find the correct lawn & row number. I spent one hour looking for the grave, no grounds people were around, other visitors kindly tried to help me. After an hour of trying to walk around the place that has no paths or level ground to walk on and nearly twisting my ankle on all the pot holes & slipping in the mud and weed I could not find the grave. I drove back to see the person at the office & they advised me they are not familiar with the area. I spent another hour and a half searching for the grave. I could not find the grave. Whilst the staff person at the office did not speak rudely they had absolutely no compassion for me and were unable to help me. This is the most distressing experience I have ever encountered at a cemetery. I hope I never have to go through that again. Note to myself ….. when I die I want to be cremated and tell the crematorium to throw my ashes in the bin …… this would be a much more dignified way to commemorate my life than being buried at Altona. I just cried all the way home. I did telephone the call centre …. At least the young chap I spoke with was kind & a little more helpful. Please only employ staff at your front desk that understand empathy and can assist a person in my situation"

"Very good place. However, they have always been changing things up and closing some roads to expand the place. They also have a very big weed infestation, which is very infuriating because it is near our passed dad, we are even doing it ourselves because it is that much of a big deal. P.S the weeds are very spiky and very easy to get pricked, so beware"

"I want to share that, despite this unfortunate incident, I truly believe Altona Memorial Park is a place of serenity, beauty, and sunshine. It’s a peaceful haven where families can find comfort and remember their loved ones. The staff here are warm, caring, and genuinely compassionate. I am grateful that I chose this place to honor my loved ones.
Today, I visited Altona Memorial and was deeply disappointed. It was heartbreaking to discover that some items from my family’s grave had been stolen. These items held great sentimental value for us, and seeing them missing was truly gut-wrenching. I don’t believe it was just the wind, especially since multiple items: two large vases, several fake flowers, and a bucket filled with water were taken.
While some may not view these items as precious, for us, they were more than just objects. The vases were used at my loved one’s funeral, and the flowers were a heartfelt gift a young girl gave her Mother on her first Mother’s Day without her mother. It’s devastating to think someone would take such simple, meaningful keepsakes. I searched the area but couldn’t find any trace of them.
I’ve also heard about the theft of children’s plaques in the park, which is equally upsetting. If these items were indeed stolen, I have to ask how disgraceful and heartless must someone be? To steal from a grave while families are mourning their loved ones is simply disgusting. These items likely cost no more than $50, but to us, they are invaluable.
Honestly, it makes me feel even sadder that people could act so cruelly and selfishly. I hope the person responsible feels ashamed because no one deserves to experience this kind of pain.
I understand YOU may see this, and I just want to say that your actions are truly LACKING proper intelligence and basic human remorse. If you’ve taken something that doesn’t belong to you, please know that karma has a way of catching up. It’s a shame that anyone would act so thoughtlessly and you will never be forgiven or forgotten."
