"Most beautiful waterfall- definitely worth it. 40min dirt road drive we did to the campgrounds in my coupe - you don’t need a 4WD as long as it’s dry."

Snowies and Kosciusko with kids?

I’d like to take my two sons - age 9 and 11 - for a hiking trip to the Snowies this April school holidays. Ideally we will book a camping spot, but could go for other accommodation if camping isn’t feasible or full. Coming from north of Sydney and can take 5 or 6 days if we need…

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking beauty of Clarke Gorge and the spectacular Cooleman Falls, calling it one of the most stunning hikes they've ever done. The adventure of multiple creek crossings and the unique limestone gorge are major highlights, though the slippery rocks and need for proper footwear are frequently mentioned.

"This is a breathtaking 5km return hike that follows Cave Creek through a narrow limestone gorge. The trail culminates at the impressive 15-meter Cooleman Falls (also known as Cave Creek Falls), offering a spectacular reward for your efforts.

Despite its official Grade 5 rating, I found the walk to be quite manageable, especially with some basic preparation. The path includes several creek crossings—up to seven, depending on conditions—which add a fun element to the hike. Wearing aqua socks or water shoes made these crossings much easier and safer. It’s surprising how many hikers attempt the trail unprepared; proper footwear truly makes a significant difference. I’m even adding a photo of the ones I got (Kmart $8)

Along the way, the trail is adorned with snow gums, vibrant wildflowers, and offers the chance to spot grey kangaroos and wedge-tailed eagles. The track starts near Blue Waterholes campground and is accessible via Long Plain Road and Blue Waterholes Trail. However, these roads can become boggy in wet conditions, so it’s advisable to check road conditions before setting out. Note that the area is closed during winter months due to weather-related hazards. "

"The last time I was there the walking trail was closed due to weed spray. This time though I was lucky and did not spend much time exploring other things as I already did the last time. I did not go up to the falls as I was intending to shoot the gorge. So the weather was fantastic to do a hike to the gorge and come back. However, I recommend you guys take proper footwear needed to cross rivers frequently and the stones are slippery. As well take gaiters as I came across snakes twice. Conditions could be different in colder climates, so prepare accordingly. As well dirt road away from Snowy Highway is beautiful with awesome views. If you want to camp at Bluewater hole campground please check weather conditions. If you are driving 4WD no problem otherwise 2Ws might get stuck while coming back from the campground as is quite steep and the storm might worsen the road.
Anyways the trail itself and the surrounding are simply fantastic and I felt as If I was in another world. If you don’t believe me try yourselves. I bet you won’t regret. Good luck and cheers!"

"Most beautiful waterfall- definitely worth it. 40min dirt road drive we did to the campgrounds in my coupe- you don’t need a 4WD as long as it’s dry. Then we did 9 river crossings to get there!!! Left our shoes on because we couldn’t be bothered taking them off after the 2nd crossing - if you have water shoes wear them. The steep drop down to the base of the waterfall scared me- went down on my bum as my shoes were wet- easy to slip. Saw brumbies, lizards and kangaroos. 1 hour walk to the waterfall. Well worth it!!!"
