What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hikers rave about the spectacular 360-degree views along The Razorback and the rewarding summit of Mount Feathertop. The well-maintained trail and camaraderie among walkers are frequently praised. However, the challenging final ascent and the unpredictable, often harsh alpine weather are noted as significant factors to prepare for.
"We had an amazing experience on the well-maintained trail to Mount Feathertop. The trail offers stunning 360-degree views from the start all the way to the summit. We began our hike at 8:00 PM on June 1, 2024, and reached the summit around 12:45 PM. The weather was fantastic, and we encountered many friendly and enthusiastic hikers along the way. Although the last 1.5 hours were quite challenging, especially for beginners like us, it was definitely manageable. Be prepared for fog, cold, strong winds, and sudden weather changes. Ensure you carry all necessary safety gear, and if you don't have an emergency beacon, at least bring an iPhone 14 for satellite messaging in case of emergencies. We returned at 5:00 PM, just before sunset at 5:03 PM. Mount Feathertop is a must-try!"

"Beautiful hike! The climb to the summit is the hardest part but perfectly manageable for most. Pretty exposed so make sure to check weather forecast. You can visit the Federation hut and MUMC hut via detour if you please. We saw 5 other people during the 7 hour hike so enjoy the peace and being alone nature!"

"I did a Razorback trail in February this year. Although it was summer, early morning in the mountain was really cold if not freezing. I’d suggest to bring a pair of warm gloves because my fingers were frozen. The trail graded as 4 but I’d say it’s a moderate with some manageable ascending. It’s long 22km return walk and takes between 7-10 hours depending on the pace. It starts at Mount Hotham and following the trail all the way towards Mount Feathertop summit. The signage is clear. The morning mist and sunrise were awesome and colourful wildflowers and bugs. It’s one of the best walk I did so far. I’d do it again if I visit Victoria Mount Hotham😎"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider an overnight stay if you have more time and experience. This breaks up the hike and allows for a more relaxed pace. However, for younger children or those new to hiking, shorter walks in the surrounding Bright or Harrietville areas might be more suitable. Always prioritize safety and assess your children's capabilities realistically.
🎒 Budget Travelers
Camping is a budget-friendly option if you have the gear. Staying at designated campsites or utilizing the basic huts (ensure you understand their purpose and limitations) can save significantly on accommodation. Packing your own food and water is essential and far cheaper than relying on services in nearby towns.
Solo Adventurers
Safety is paramount for solo hikers. Inform someone of your itinerary, carry a satellite communication device (like an iPhone 14 with satellite messaging) or an emergency beacon, and be prepared for all weather conditions. The trail is generally well-marked, but always have a map and compass.

The Razorback Trail: A Ridge Walk Like No Other
This trail is often described as one of the most spectacular in Victoria, and for good reason. The undulating path along the ridge provides a constant sense of elevation and perspective. It's a 22km return journey from Mount Hotham to Mount Feathertop, making it a substantial undertaking for a day hike, but also a fantastic option for an overnight adventure.
Key features of The Razorback include its accessibility from Mount Hotham, its well-defined path (though rocky in places), and the sheer visual reward. It's a place where you can truly feel on top of the world, with sweeping vistas stretching out in every direction. Be prepared for the elements, as the exposed nature of the ridge means weather can change rapidly.
Conquering Mount Feathertop: The Final Ascent
Hikers often report that the last 1.5 hours are particularly tough, requiring good stamina and careful footing. The trail here can be rocky and narrow, with steep drop-offs, so concentration is key. Despite the physical exertion, the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit is immense, and the panoramic views are your ultimate reward.
Tips for the summit push: Pace yourself, take short breaks, and stay hydrated. If you're doing this as a day hike, ensure you have ample time to descend before sunset. For those who are less experienced, consider the physical demands and perhaps tackle the hike with a more experienced companion or on a day with excellent weather.
Best Times and Conditions for The Razorback
Winter (June to August) transforms the landscape into a snowy wonderland, making it a popular choice for experienced hikers seeking a winter mountaineering challenge. Snow and ice can make the trail treacherous, requiring specialized gear like crampons and ice axes, and a high level of winter hiking proficiency. Visibility can be severely reduced by fog and blizzards.
Spring and Autumn offer transitional beauty, with spring bringing blooming wildflowers and autumn painting the mountainsides with golden hues. However, these seasons can also be unpredictable with rapidly changing weather. Always check the forecast and park conditions before heading out, and be prepared for all types of alpine weather.
