Beneath Kuranda’s beauty is something ancient and angry. 🌴 Based on real railway deaths, strange disappearances, and local legends that still haunt Far North Queensland. 🚂 Some tracks were built on graves. Check out Stoney Creek in Barron Gorge NP. The water is beautiful for a swim, only a stones throw from the city or northern beaches. #ourcairns #cairns #exploretnq #tropicalnorthqueensland #northqueensland #nationalparksaustralia #thisisqueensland #explorequeensland #queensland #naturetherapy #nature #waterfalls #australia #rainforest

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the refreshing swimming holes and the beautiful rainforest setting along the Stoney Creek Trail. While the main waterfall is a highlight, many find the journey and the secluded rock pools to be the most enjoyable part. Some note the trail can be challenging with steep sections, and advise caution with navigation.

"At last we made to the bridge and the falls through the 'Stoney Creek Trail', missed the train as we spent too much time playing in these rock pools along the trail, only heard it sounding down the hill when we still like a few hundred metres away...otherwise, a fantastic walk all the way through the rain forest along the creek."

"It's a small waterfall compared to the Barron Falls, but still an amazing view. Fascinating to see from the scenic railway, as the train bridges over the falls on an extremely tight curve, which allows views of the waterfall, as well as a view of Barron Gorge on the other side, and a view back along the train as it crosses the bridge. Definitely worth seeing for yourself."

"Hiked here from stones creek car park.

Very challenging at times with some very steep climbs up rock faces. The first time I tried to do it I got lost following the orange tags and ended up on the side of a cliff.
So the second time I just followed the creek right up and I reached the falls.

It’s also a beautiful swim underneath which is refreshing after a hard hike."

The Stoney Creek Trail Experience

The Stoney Creek Trail is a highlight for many visitors to Barron Gorge National Park. This rainforest path winds alongside the creek, offering a refreshing escape into nature. While the main Stoney Creek Falls are a draw, the real magic for many lies in the numerous rock pools and smaller cascades discovered along the trail. These secluded spots are perfect for a cooling dip on a hot tropical day. InstagramReddit

Be prepared for a moderately challenging hike. The trail features steep climbs and rocky sections, so wearing appropriate footwear like hiking shoes is crucial for safety and comfort. Some hikers have reported getting lost following trail markers, so a reliable method is to simply follow the creek directly upstream, which is a sure way to reach the falls. Reddit

Beyond the physical exertion, the trail offers a sensory experience. The sounds of the rainforest, the sight of lush vegetation, and the feel of the cool water create a truly immersive adventure. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; the creek itself is known to host freshwater shrimps and even turtles. Reddit

Viewing Stoney Creek Falls: Train vs. Trail

There are two primary ways to experience Stoney Creek Falls: from the Kuranda Scenic Railway or via the Stoney Creek Trail. Each offers a distinct perspective. The railway provides a dramatic, fleeting glimpse of the falls as it navigates a tight curve over the gorge, a feat of engineering that allows passengers to see the waterfall and the vastness of Barron Gorge simultaneously. This is a must-see for train enthusiasts and those seeking an iconic view. Reddit

The Stoney Creek Trail, on the other hand, offers a more intimate and active encounter. Hikers can get up close to the falls and, more importantly, discover the numerous swimming holes and smaller cascades that dot the creek's path. This trail is for those who want to immerse themselves in the environment, enjoy a refreshing swim, and appreciate the rainforest at their own pace. InstagramReddit

While the main falls are impressive, the journey along the trail is often described as the highlight, with many visitors spending more time playing in the rock pools than reaching the main waterfall. It's a matter of preference: a quick, spectacular view from the train or an adventurous, refreshing exploration on foot. Reddit
