"This is a free museum. Worth taking half an hour to have a look at the collection. The best thing about this museum though are the volunteers who man it. I had the great fortune to encounter an old chap called "Artie" who regaled me with quite a few yarns. I was in the Mackay area looking into family history. It is all well and good to look at more elaborate plantation house museums showing the life of the wealthy landowners, but this museum gives true insight into the lives of more ordinary people. My grandfather was a cane cutter in the 1920s and Arties description of this hard yakka, the sticky residue, the carbon residue of the burns, the insects...really brought this part of history to life. Thanks Artie."
