What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Baxter Falls is praised for its stunning waterfall and refreshing swimming hole, offering a beautiful natural escape. However, many visitors find the hike back up to be extremely steep and exhausting, requiring good physical fitness and proper preparation. The scenic trail and unique suspension bridge are definite highlights.
"Beautiful falls and swimming hole but I'll never go back as the hike out is absolutely exhausting. At least an hour up a very steep ravine with multiple steps of varying size..."

"Located a little north of Flaxton is this beautiful waterfall and swimming hole. Quiet an easy few kilometre walk in for my hubby and I, although some may find it a little challenging going back up. The walk is through open Eucalypt forest and follows Baxter creek at the bottom. Their is remnants of old timber cutter trees along the way, some stairs and a suspension bridge aswell with lovely scenery the whole way through. Their is also a camp for walkers/hikers as their are a few walks that branch off this track. (I think it may be part of one of The Great Walks). This is accessible via X2 entry points. We parked along Flaxton Mill Rd carpark and walked in that way. The track is quiet unmaintained for a very short while then it fully opens out (so don't think your in the wrong spot). Be considerate of the locals that live nearby too."

"Before visiting these waterfalls, make sure to read the reviews to prepare yourself. Ensure you're in good condition as the hike can be pretty exhausting. It took me around 2.5 hours, but some people might find it easier and complete it more quickly. Remember to use the restroom beforehand as there are no public toilets nearby, and don't forget to bring enough water.
For the directions, avoid solely relying on Google Maps, as it may lead you to a private house. Instead, head to Flaxton Mill Road, where you'll find an entrance with a car park on the right-hand corner. Drive slowly to spot it easily.
To be honest, this walk is breathtakingly beautiful and refreshing, but I strongly advise against doing it in the summer due to the heat. The waterfalls are stunning, but make sure to wear good arch support shoes to avoid discomfort. Don't wear white shoes, as some parts of the trail can get muddy. Pack light in your backpack, carrying only a bottle of water, as the way back can be tough.
Starting from the car park, it took us 25 minutes until we encountered a lot of mud. Keep following the "Mapleton Falls 5.5 km" sign, which will lead you down to Baxter Falls. The trail is easy to follow at first, but it gets steeper with zigzags, and you might feel tired and wonder when you'll reach the waterfalls (I almost cried!). From the sign, it took us 35 minutes to finally arrive at the waterfalls. The descent took almost an hour. The ascent was a bit tough for me, requiring frequent rest breaks. In total, it took me about 2.5 hours."

The Baxter Falls Hike: What to Expect
One of the most distinctive features of the hike is the suspension bridge that spans the gorge. Bolted into boulders on either side of the creek, it provides a thrilling and scenic crossing. This bridge is a popular photo opportunity and adds an element of adventure to the trek. The path can get muddy in places, so wearing appropriate footwear is crucial. Despite the challenging ascent, most visitors agree that the destination—the beautiful waterfall and its swimming hole—makes the effort entirely worthwhile.
Swimming and Enjoying the Falls
It's important to note that while the falls are stunning, the hike back up can be exhausting. Therefore, planning your visit during cooler months is highly recommended to avoid the intense summer heat. Remember to bring sufficient water and pack light to make the return journey as manageable as possible. The experience of swimming in the natural pool beneath the falls is a highlight for many, providing a rewarding end to the adventure.
