What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Robe for its stunning coastal scenery, particularly Long Beach, and its well-preserved historic sites like the Gaol ruins. The town's charming atmosphere and opportunities for relaxation are frequently highlighted. Some reviews mention that the Gaol ruins could have been better preserved, but still offer an interesting historical glimpse.
"The old goal ruins is well worth a visit. Though worn down overtime, still enough still to see. Signs about for each room as well as information on signs just before going in there. Interesting bit of history. Small car park nearby. A must see if in the area."
Christine Brandt
"Old Gaol - 1961
Commissioned in 1859 and opened in 1861, the complex included a substantial stone building with four holding cells, a receiving yard and a Keeper's residence.
With Robe in decline, the gaol closed permanently in 1881, and the last prisoner was transferred to Mount Gambier. The building gradually fell into disrepair and most of it was eventually demolished and used as road rubble.
Restoration work to rebuild the lower part of the walls in 1995 created this popular historic site."
John Winter
"Do love an old gaol ruin!
Imagine being a prisoner in this gaol, how cold and miserable would it have been.
Obviously not a large gaol, but perched up on that hill, with the wild wind off the water would hand made for a very difficult existence."
