Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning, postcard-perfect views of the Bay of Fires, particularly the unique, lichen-covered rocks. While the drive and carpark can be challenging, the breathtaking scenery and natural beauty make it a highly recommended stop, especially for photography and family exploration. Be mindful of slippery rocks.

"This is just a beautiful place to see the Bay of Fires. From the viewing platform at The Gardens you can see the entire Bay with its stunning water and near white sand. Unlike elsewhere this also has rocks fit for clambering on for photos. The rocks are beautiful in their own right with a red tinge to them.

It's not the most easiest place to get to, especially for those who get a little nauseous in the car. But it is worth it.

There is a limitation. The carpark. There is not very much of it, it's unmade and has quite a lot of potholes. If you are here after a heavy rain you will run the risk of stepping into big puddles.
We were travelling in off peak on a very nice day and there was no parking after we arrived."

"It’s like the best kids’ nature playground — about a 35-minute drive from St Helens. Rocks to climb, nature to explore, and the beach just on the other side. My 5-year-old could’ve stayed there all day! 🌊🪨☀️
Just be careful on the rocks though — this is where I fractured my ankle, and the hospital said it happens quite often! 😅"

"Not to be missed if you are visiting St Helens. Such postcard quality views. Go in the morning after 10am for good lighting."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Geology of The Gardens

The striking orange and red hues adorning the granite boulders at The Gardens are caused by a type of lichen. This lichen, often Xanthoparmelia salacincola, thrives in the coastal environment, feeding on minerals from the rock and moisture from the sea spray. The contrast between these vibrant rocks, the pristine white sand, and the turquoise waters of the Bay of Fires is what makes this location so visually spectacular and a magnet for photographers. Reddit

These rocks are not just visually appealing; they also create a natural playground. Visitors can clamber over them, but caution is strongly advised. The lichen can make the surfaces incredibly slippery, and injuries, including fractures, have been reported. It's a reminder to admire their beauty while prioritizing safety. Reddit

The geological formations are a key part of the Bay of Fires' charm, distinguishing it from other coastal areas. The interplay of ancient granite, resilient lichen, and the dynamic marine environment creates a landscape that feels both timeless and ever-changing.

Photography Tips for Capturing the Bay of Fires

The Gardens offers a photographer's paradise, especially during the 'golden hours' of sunrise and sunset. The low-angled light accentuates the textures of the lichen-covered rocks and casts a warm glow over the entire scene. Many visitors recommend arriving after 10 AM for good lighting, but the early morning light is often considered magical for capturing the bay's essence. Reddit

When composing your shots, consider using a wide-angle lens to encompass the vastness of the bay and the dramatic rock formations. For closer details, a macro lens can reveal the intricate patterns of the lichen. Don't be afraid to experiment with different perspectives, but always be mindful of the slippery surfaces when navigating the rocks. Reddit

Using a polarizing filter can help cut down on glare and enhance the vibrant blues of the water and the rich colors of the lichen. Remember to check local drone regulations if you plan to capture aerial shots, as these can vary. Ultimately, the key is to be patient, observe the light, and capture the unique beauty of this coastal gem.
