What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally find Mount Alexandra Reserve and Nattai Gorge Lookout to be a pleasant and accessible natural escape. The highlight for many is the historic train tunnel, offering a unique experience beyond the main lookout views. While some trails can be muddy, the relatively easy terrain makes it suitable for families and dog walkers.
"We arrived today after an hour 10 min drive to see the main trail was actually closed. However the emergency vehicle trail was open, it was a nice bush walk to the end. Only about 4.5km round trip to the look out. However we really wanted to see the train tunnel. When we arrived at the sign which pointed to the look out, we desired to follow the signs pointing back to the original trail. We only had to follow it about 500m to find the old train tunnel. It really was the highlight of the walk. We had an 8 year old and a 5 year old who walked the whole way themselves. We didn’t move fast though and ended up taking us probably 2.5 hours. Could definitely do it in a hour with fast walking adults! A few different trails to walk and we agreed we would like to come back without the kids to explore the steeper trails. Was a nice hike all in all.
Wanted to post this update to the trails current condition. There was a small water crossing, which we were able to hop across on branches and ricks. And maybe 2-3 muddy sections but mostly it’s firm ground and easy walking. Good for any age really.
The lookout is nice but a little underwhelming considering the time it took us to get there, finding the tunnel is what made the hike worth it. So if you’re going with kids makes sure you can make the whole 5.5km at least. I hear the main trail is even longer than the emergency vehicle trail.
The only thing that would have made me rate this 5 stars was if there was a waterfall."

Exploring the Historic Train Tunnel
Finding the tunnel often involves following signs back towards the original trail from the lookout area. The walk to it is generally manageable, even for families with young children, though it's wise to be prepared for potentially uneven ground. The experience of walking through the tunnel, imagining its former use, is a memorable part of the Mount Alexandra Reserve adventure.
Navigating Trail Conditions
Expect sections of the trail to be muddy, particularly after rainfall, and be prepared for small water crossings. These can usually be navigated by hopping across rocks or branches. Despite these conditions, the ground is generally firm and easy to walk on for much of the route. Wearing appropriate footwear, such as sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, is highly recommended to ensure comfort and safety.
For those planning a longer hike, the main trail is reportedly even longer than the emergency vehicle trail. If you're visiting with children, aiming for at least a 5.5km walk to cover both the lookout and the tunnel is suggested to make the most of the experience.
