Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Maria Plain Basilica for its breathtaking panoramic views of Salzburg, especially at sunset, and its beautiful, ornate baroque interior. The peaceful atmosphere and free entry/parking are significant draws, making it a highly recommended 'hidden gem' for a serene experience.
"Beautiful church perched high on a hill. I first saw this church a few years ago from the train and then by car and tried to figure out what it was and the location then discovered it was called Maria Plain.
Finally on my travels this year - Aug 2024, I got to visit. It is in the middle of nowhere so you would need a car/taxi to get there as it is not accessible via public transport.
Quite a few steps to climb but not arduous. Once at the top if you turn left and go to the Christ statue, you are rewarded with amazing panoramic views over the city of Salzburg.
The church is very ornate and elaborate, there are many things to photograph and look at. A peaceful and serene place. There are benches by the tree to sit and relax whilst you take in the views over the city.
A little hidden gem in Salzburg! The church is free to enter.
Parking is free."

"This place is the closest to heaven you can get. Pure paradise! The monastery looks gorgeous from the outside, but the view from the city is breathtaking. Great place to watch the sunset, have a walk and see the city view. Very quiet and beautiful place. Can’t wait to go inside as well! Must see in Salzburg!"
