What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Heiligenkreuz Abbey for its profound spiritual atmosphere, stunning architecture, and the moving experience of attending sung masses. The informative audio guide and the unique opportunity to feed animals on Kalvarienberg are also frequently highlighted as positive aspects. Some visitors noted the absence of a large library, which they've come to expect in other Austrian abbeys, but this is a minor point against an otherwise overwhelmingly positive experience.
"I visited this abbey last week I think this is one of the oldest abbeys in Austria, very nice and authentic. We loved it! But we missed a library as we got accustomed in Austrian abbeys to huge and beautiful libraries, we love them. Irregardless of this the abbey was amazing!"

"One of the best and most informative audio guide tours I have experienced. History, architecture, religion, art.. all are discussed. It’s a fantastic experience!!"
Christina Bergen
"If you take the tour you will get a quite good audio guide. The tour shows you very beautiful rooms that you normally can't see in an abbey. It's great how open the monks are here.
Even better if you plan ahead you can listen for free to their sung masses and special sung liturgies. We were lucky to attend on a Wednesday 6pm for a special "vesper" liturgy, where everything was sung, even the word which are normally spoken. Im not a Christian, but I can recognize beauty and peace and the singing was really very beautiful to behold and very spiritual.
Another tip: if you like feeding animals, bring some 1 Euro coins and go up the stations of the cross (Kreuzweg/Kalvarienberg). On top you find a good dispenser and a bell. Ring it and some very friendly goats and donkeys will come to you and you can feed them through a fence."
