What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking views and the unique experience of riding the historic Salamander cogwheel railway up Schneeberg. The alpine scenery and the sunrise tour are frequently highlighted as unforgettable moments. However, some find the train tickets pricey and the carriages can be uncomfortably crowded, especially on weekends.
"Family with two small children staying at a nearby hotel for hunting. We took the train to the very top ($50 per adult, under 6 free). There’s a pretty nice playground. We walked 30 minutes to Damdockhaus and ate lunch, had a beer, and walked back. The food was really good! Views were incredible! It was a nice and relaxing day. 2.5 hours at the top was perfect. The train was pretty packed so get there early to get a good seat by the window. It was uncomfortably packed on the ride down though. It’s definitely colder at the top so being a jacket! Hiking boots not necessary for us. I wore jeans and tennis shoes and was fine. There’s also decent cell service up there. Would recommend to do it once, wouldn’t do it twice as a casual sightseeing thing."

"Fantastic experience! The train tickets are perhaps a little pricey, but it is definitely worth going nevertheless. We went on a quiet day in early November, so it was not busy and overall very comfortable. The view from the very top is simply breathtaking. It does get cold, so remember to bring appropriate clothing. The restaurant on top is not great, it was completely empty, cold, messy, and very much unclear what and where you could have something to eat (a few handwritten cardboard menu signs, would have expected more). So better to pass by one of the huts at the other stops of the train if you also want to eat something. The marille filled pockets you can buy on the way (the train briefly stops for this) are very delicious, definitely recommend those!"

"The concept and the fact that you can go up to such a huge mountain, is absolutely amazing. On the other hand, as an experience during the summer it was horrible. The train was overcrowded without any AC, for a price like a plane ticket (47 EUR). On weekends you must buy the ticket 3-5 days before your trip."
