The Belize Zoo started as a home to care for 17 animals that were left after filming a 1983 documentary called La Selva Verde. Today, it is home to approximately 180 Belize native animals – all who were given as gifts from other zoos, born there, rescued, or injured, and cannot go back into the wild. This feature gave it its well-deserved nickname ‘The Happiest Zoo in the World’. Book your Belize ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise The Belize Zoo for its dedication to native wildlife conservation and its unique sanctuary approach. Many highlight the knowledgeable and friendly staff, especially during special tours and encounters. While the facilities are described as basic, the overall experience is considered educational, engaging, and impactful, with the night tour being a standout activity. Reddit

"This is an incredible zoo. The animals are well taken care of and appear to be very happy. Every single animal has a name! We went with a tour guide but that is not necessary. There are wonderful signs in front of every habitat that explain who the animal is and how they got there. All of the animals are injured or cannot be reintroduced to the wild for other reasons, nothing is captured. They are very environmentally conscious. Rose was my favorite animal!"

JMD

"Super fun experience, especially because we did a guided tour and leopard experience! Would definitely do again. The guide was super knowledgeable and a nice and chill guy. It's great to know that this zoo is one that rehabilitates the animals and only keeps the ones that were injured to the point where they probably would not survive in the wild."

Michael Regilio

"A truly wonderful zoo that does amazing work for local animals. The zoo helps rehabilitate and rescue many different animals and takes great care of them. We did the jaguar and macaw experience and absolutely loved getting to interact with the animals so close. You can even stay right next to the zoo at their tropical education center which is a convenient stop near the airport for your first or last day in Belize."
