Reviews Summary

Baines Baobabs is lauded for its stunning, almost spiritual beauty and the awe-inspiring presence of its ancient baobab trees. Visitors appreciate the profound sense of isolation and the unique historical significance of the site. However, the challenging sandy drive, high costs for park and campsite fees, and inconsistent wildlife sightings are frequently cited drawbacks.

"Amazingly giant trees at the edge of the salt flat in Nxai Pan. The drive is more than one hour on sand tracks from the entrance. The ranger advised us to make sure there were no lions hidden among the trees before getting out of the car, but there were almost no animal sightings along the entire drive."

Clement Chan

"Stayed here for a night (campsite 3) a couple of weeks ago. Where to start. I’ll role the National Park experience into the review. Nxai Pan, disappointing… one water hole with water (August), run down buildings, heavily rutted roads. The drive in is miles of deep sand. Baines Baobabs… nice setting, VERY expensive and not worth the money. They don’t even provide a rubbish bin. For the money that is a very basic necessity. Cool experience, would not stay again. For one night we had to pay two days park fees (soooo stupid) + the campsite fees. Not worth the money compared to all other places we stayed."

Nxai Pan National Park: Beyond the Baobabs

Nxai Pan National Park, where Baines Baobabs is located, is a vast landscape of salt pans and acacia woodlands. While the baobabs are the star attraction, the park itself offers a unique, albeit sometimes challenging, safari experience. During the dry season (typically May to October), wildlife congregates around the few remaining waterholes, making them prime spots for sightings. Reddit

However, visitors have noted that water sources can be scarce, with only one waterhole having water in August during a recent visit. The park's roads can be heavily rutted and sandy, requiring careful navigation. Despite the potential for fewer animal sightings compared to other parks, the sheer scale and emptiness of Nxai Pan offer a profound sense of wilderness and isolation. Reddit

Combining a visit to Baines Baobabs with exploring other parts of Nxai Pan, such as the South Camp, can provide a more comprehensive experience of the park's diverse, albeit subtle, beauty. The remoteness is a key feature, offering a peaceful escape for those who appreciate the wild. Reddit
