Visitors consistently praise the Capela Dourada as a 'little jewel' and a 'spectacular must-see' in Recife, highlighting its incredibly ornate, gold-covered baroque interior and the fascinating history of the Franciscan order and colonial sugar merchants. The affordability and the helpfulness of the lay guides are also frequently mentioned positives.

"Nice chapel with lots of paintings and gilded carvings. To access, enter the small unmarked door in between the two churches (image attached). 15 reais.

Note that you can also see the chapel for free, from inside the church (but just through a fence)."

Josiah Wadsack

"Not really worth visiting, unless you are very interested in the Franciscan order and its establishment in Brazil. Lots of baroque wood carving and gold plate. Strange diorama of St Francis and the pope, accompanied by several female saints, who looked like characters in a horror movie. We didn’t take any photos."

Alexander Grimwade

"Spectacular must see in the centre of Recife. Pernambuco was the richest par of Brazil during colonial times, because of the sugar industry. Sugar was exported through port of Recife. Merchants that exported the sugar had their club - ordem terceira. And they created this chapel as a gathering room for the members of the club and guests. Fascinating history and very well preserved and presented. Costs 15 reais only and there there were volunteers giving all the explanations about the space in Portuguese"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Opulence of Colonial Recife

The Capela Dourada (Golden Chapel) is a testament to the immense wealth generated by the sugar industry in colonial Pernambuco. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Recife was a major port for exporting sugar, making its merchants incredibly prosperous. This wealth was often displayed through lavish religious architecture, and the Capela Dourada is a prime example. It served as the meeting house for the Ordem Terceira de São Francisco (Third Order of Saint Francis), a brotherhood of laypeople, many of whom were wealthy merchants.

The chapel's interior is a breathtaking display of baroque artistry, characterized by its extensive use of gilded wood carvings and vibrant paintings. The sheer amount of gold leaf applied to the walls, ceilings, and altars is astonishing, reflecting the economic power of the era. Visitors often remark on the contrast between the Franciscan vow of poverty and the chapel's opulent decoration, a common theme in colonial Brazilian religious art where earthly wealth was used to glorify the divine.

Beyond the visual splendor, the Capela Dourada offers a glimpse into the social and religious fabric of colonial Brazil. The presence of knowledgeable lay Franciscans as guides enhances the experience, providing historical context and anecdotes that bring the chapel's past to life. It’s not just a beautiful building; it’s a narrative of faith, commerce, and artistry intertwined. Reddit

For visitors, it's advisable to wear comfortable shoes as you'll likely be doing a lot of walking on uneven surfaces. Public transport can get you to the general vicinity, but for the best experience of the historic center, walking is often recommended.
