Segundo fonte wikparques "A estação foi criada na intenção de preservar uma parcela desse território devido a presença do Peripatus acacioi, um invertebrado vermiforme categorizado em extinção do filo Onychophora, O qual apresenta características basais, sendo importante elo para se entender a filogenia do agrupamento dos invertebrados, também são conhecido popularmente como verme-aveludado, e em toda extensão territorial brasileira os onicoforas são encontrados apenas nessa pequena parcela de Minas Gerais , por isso a importância da criação da Estação Ecológica.
