"A igreja barroca de Nossa Senhora do Amparo é abordada por Gilberto Freyre na pág. 115 de seu guia de Olinda: “Outra igreja velha de Olinda é a do Amparo que já existia em 1613; foi destruída pelo incêndio de 1631 e reconstruída em 1644. [...] Não é igreja que tenha alguma coisa de grandioso; mas o trabalho de talha de sua capela-mor não é desprezível; e seus altares laterais – o do Bom Jesus e o de Santa Cecília [padroeira da música] – são dignos de ser olhados.”

Foi erguida em 1613 e reedificada em 1644 após ser parcialmente destruída por um incêndio causado pelos holandeses, mas os trabalhos continuaram até o fim do século XVIII, quando assumiu sua conformação barroca definitiva, e de fato ela jamais foi inteiramente concluída.
