What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Praia do Jabaquara offers a unique experience with its very warm, shallow waters, making it excellent for kayaking and SUP. While some visitors find the water quality and cleanliness disappointing, others enjoy the local atmosphere at the beachfront kiosks and the dramatic tidal changes. It's a beach best suited for water sports and relaxation rather than traditional swimming.
"Was not a big fan of this beach. It was dirty, I literally had dirty drops all around my body when I got out of the water. It was really peculiar as the water was probably the warmest water I have ever been in in my life. It felt like entering a hot spring and as you may expect, algae thrives in such environment. I guess it is so warm because the whole bay is incredibly shallow. It is a great jumping off point for kayaking though. If you want a nice beach experience though, you will have to take the bus and ride to the surrounding beaches. And yes, they clean horses in the water."

"Dirty, muddy, green and warm water. Even the beach itself isn’t clean. Literally no one was swimming in the water.
I have no idea why this thing has such good reviews. Avoid it."

"I loved it!! 😄😄😄 Tide is low in the morning. From 11/12 midday tide slowly becomes higher and almost no sand is left bu 4 pm. At the same time that tide starts, wind comes along which is good to get some hot air flowing but for people doing kayaking or SUP is better to do it in the morning. There's several kiosks with food and drinks and some have music. I stayed close to the last kiosk which had the best chilled samba and full of local people. Not a lot of people cne here for swimming as the water is kind of brownish. But of course you can get into the water"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Understanding the Water Conditions
Because of these conditions, many visitors find Praia do Jabaquara less ideal for traditional swimming compared to other beaches. However, its calm and shallow nature makes it a fantastic spot for activities like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). The gentle waters provide a safe and accessible environment for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
If your primary goal is swimming in clear, cool waters, you might consider exploring other beaches near Paraty. However, if you're looking for a unique water experience, a great launch point for water sports, or a relaxed atmosphere with local charm, Praia do Jabaquara offers a distinct appeal.
The Tidal Dance of Jabaquara
This tidal phenomenon is best observed from late morning to late afternoon. In the morning, you'll typically find more sandy area, ideal for lounging or setting up your spot. As midday progresses, the tide begins to rise, gradually reclaiming the sand. By around 4 PM, there might be very little beach left visible, creating a unique visual spectacle.
This change also influences the wind conditions. The incoming tide often brings a breeze, which can be refreshing but might affect water sports. For those planning to kayak or SUP, the morning, with its lower tide and calmer conditions, is generally preferred.
Local Flavors and Atmosphere
Some kiosks are noted for their chilled samba music and a strong presence of local patrons, offering an authentic taste of Brazilian beach culture. While prices might be slightly higher than in the town center, the convenience and ambiance make it a worthwhile experience for many. It's a great place to unwind after a session of kayaking or simply to enjoy the scenery.
For those with specific dietary needs, it's advisable to inquire directly with the kiosks about vegetarian or vegan options, as these may be limited. However, the overall consensus is that the kiosks provide a pleasant and integral part of the Praia do Jabaquara experience, enhancing the beach's charm.
