"Whistleblower review – read before applying at the Medical Faculty.
As someone who applied independently (without an agent), I quickly discovered that the process of entering this medical school seems to reward those who go through informal, questionable channels.

There were two exam sittings — one mostly for international students, another including Bulgarians. During the first sitting a fellow foreign prospective student confided in me that they were given the entrance exam questions before the actual test by their agent, to whom they paid hundreds of euros, so they needn’t sit the second exam which literally costed me less than 20 euro. On exam day, I personally witnessed students copying from each other while invigilators ignored it completely. Even more concerning, just before the exam began, I saw an agent chatting cheekily with the lead professor while pointing at certain students. The familiarity between them was undeniable — and it raised serious concerns about how impartial the process truly was.

During the second sitting, the "random" selection of which paper to use was handed to me as I was seated at the front row and had raised my hand first. Just before I made the selection, a Bulgarian student called out, “Choose wisely!” Only afterward did I realize that I had unknowingly picked the version that most of the room hadn’t expected. The reaction said it all — visible panic among prospective students and a look of dread on the lead professor’s face. It became clear that some people had seen the other version of the exam in advance.

An agent I consulted early on, told me it was “impossible to apply without (their) help”. By “applying”they probably meant being admitted. He even offered to alter my school grades — for an extra €100. I declined. Despite having a postgraduate-level background in sciences (including Biological and Chemical) and finding the exam easy, I wasn’t accepted.

I also attended (and paid for) their one-week crash course that was supposed to prepare applicants for the entrance exam — but it felt more like a formality. During that course, I asked one of the professors, “I heard that at the Medical University of Sofia, students get failed by professors arbitrarily. Does that happen here too?” She smiled and said, “No, here nobody ever fails.” That answer said a lot. You can draw your own conclusions about what that means for academic rigor.

All of this strongly suggests that merit isn’t what decides admission and graduation from here."
