What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the beautiful Boyana Waterfall and the rewarding hike through picturesque, shaded forests. The panoramic city views from the viewpoint are a major highlight, making the effort worthwhile. While trails are generally well-marked, some sections may require navigating fallen trees, and it's crucial to remember not to drink the waterfall water.
"lovely hike through the woods. there are two options for the path: the green and the red, the green being the calmer hike and the red more dangerous and steeper. we took the green route and it was very nice - all shaded, about an hour and a half climb. the path on the way up doesn’t really flatten out it’s mostly uphill but the scenery is so picturesque that you forget about your struggle to move for a bit. there were also lots of salamanders (see photos) on the path that kept scaring me purely because I didn’t see them until I almost stepped on them - idk how seeing as they are neon yellow. anyway the waterfall itself is beautiful and I would also say bring a jacket because it can get pretty cold in those woods and especially near the water."

"Where to start
1. DO NOT DRINK FROM THE WATERFALL!!!!!
There are mice and particles and bacteria in the water :(
The hiking itself was great and beautiful. The viewpoint is really worth it, it’s half way to the waterfall.
The only thing they should they care of it’s the signs, it is not very clear how to arrive to the waterfall, but it is worth it."

"We visited this waterfall twice — the first time, we took the trail that goes from the top down, and the second time we started from the point near Boyana Church. Both routes had their own charm and offered different kinds of enjoyment.
On the way to the waterfall, you pass through beautiful scenery, making the hike itself a real pleasure. And once you reach the falls, the view is absolutely breathtaking. Sitting down for a coffee and taking it all in was such a peaceful and rewarding moment.
There are both easy and more challenging paths available — I’ve tried both, and they’re really well maintained. You can tell a lot of thought went into designing the trails, and the signage is super clear — it’s nearly impossible to get lost.
For us, it was an incredibly enjoyable experience. We even wandered off the main path a couple of times to explore new spots, and it truly felt like walking through a magical forest."

📸 📸 Photography Tips
The waterfall itself is a prime subject. Don't miss the viewpoint offering panoramic city views, and capture the lush greenery and unique forest atmosphere.
Morning light can be soft and beautiful for forest shots. Midday might offer good light for the city panorama, but be mindful of harsh shadows.
A tripod can be helpful for capturing the silky water effect of the waterfall, especially if you want longer exposures. However, it might be cumbersome on the hike.
Experiment with different perspectives – from the base of the falls, from higher up looking down, and from the surrounding rocks. The viewpoint offers a wide-angle opportunity.
If you're interested in photographing insects or salamanders, a macro lens or a telephoto lens with macro capabilities would be ideal. Be patient and respectful of their space.
