"Amazing blast from the past. Besides thousands of antique items from the Soviet era, there is an impressive car collection. Each of the vehicles is perfectly restored and displayed. Very recommended"
Dany Kravets
"Don't be fooled by the car pictures into thinking that this is ONLY a car museum. There are so many household items like hygiene products, toys, musical instruments, televisions, cigarettes, desserts used and consumed by the people in those times. This museum is a travel to the past!
I have to say that the price is a bit expensive."
Alper Halil
"What a fascinating place. I wouldn't call it a museum necessarily, but the collection of cars and everyday items from the communist times in Europe (not much from Asia). If you're a fan of the history of ordinary things and people, this is the place. I probably could've spent hours here, but the air conditioning was not the best so it got a bit stuffy in there. They also play music from the era which is great for the atmosphere.
The wax museum is meh, I personally would skip it. Not worth the extra money.
There's also a great selection of magnets in the gift shop. I had a hard time choosing ones that I liked."

The Automotive Heartbeat: A Car Lover's Paradise
Beyond the iconic Ladas, the museum showcases a broader spectrum of Eastern Bloc automotive history. You'll find models like the Volga, Skoda, and even some motorcycles such as Jawa and Simson. The attention to detail in their restoration and presentation allows visitors to truly appreciate the design and cultural significance of these vehicles. It’s a chance to see cars that were once a dream for millions, now preserved for future generations to admire.
Many visitors highlight the perfect restoration of these cars, noting that they look as if they just rolled off the assembly line. This dedication to preservation is a key reason why the Retro Museum Varna is so highly recommended by car aficionados. The opportunity to get up close to these automotive legends, often in recreated street scenes, provides an immersive experience that goes beyond a typical museum visit.
A Glimpse into Daily Life: Beyond the Cars
The museum excels at recreating the atmosphere of the time through these displays. You'll find vintage radios playing music from the era, old telephones, and furniture that transports you back decades. This comprehensive approach makes the museum more than just a collection of objects; it's a portal to a different time, offering a unique educational and emotional experience. The inclusion of these personal items adds a layer of authenticity that resonates deeply with those who lived through or are curious about this period.
Many reviewers emphasize that this aspect of the museum is a 'travel to the past' and a 'journey through time'. It’s this detailed portrayal of daily existence, alongside the iconic vehicles, that makes the Retro Museum Varna a truly memorable and insightful destination. The collection is so extensive that you could spend hours examining the details of each display, uncovering forgotten brands and familiar objects.
The Wax Figure Exhibition: A Mixed Bag
Reviews for the wax figures are somewhat mixed. Some find them to be a decent complement to the main exhibits, offering a visual representation of historical figures. However, a common sentiment is that they might not be as high-quality or as engaging as wax figures found in more specialized wax museums. For some, the price of admission might feel a bit steep if the wax figures are a significant factor in their decision to visit.
Ultimately, whether the wax figure exhibition is 'worth it' depends on individual expectations. If you're primarily interested in the cars and the everyday artifacts, you might consider it an optional extra. However, if you enjoy seeing historical figures brought to life, it can add to the overall experience of the Retro Museum Varna.
