"the murals are awesome & extraordinary. when I was there, there’s heavy thunderstorm, so many people are sitting inside. Need to avoid their heads so photos are not great. But definitely worth to come here despite the 3.5 hours drive."

"This is the most beautifully painted orthodox church I have ever seen. I was raised in orthodox religion so I’ve seen a few churches and monasteries in my life😂 they always have a lot of golden stuff inside. This time were none and I loved this. The dark paintings gave me a feeling of peace and rest.
The tower of the church can also be visited, and it have an elevator so you won’t have to climb more stairs 😂 It has a separate entry fee of 5 leva but when you reach the top you get an wonderful view."

Andreea Daniela Dinulescu

"Beautiful rebuilt church located within Tsarevets Fortress. Not really functioning as a church any more, more an art exhibition but still a beautiful sight. Be warned the tower adjoining the church is open to the public to go up but only on certain days."

The Artistry of the Murals

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God is renowned for its exceptionally painted interior. Unlike traditional Orthodox churches that often feature abundant gold, this cathedral's walls are covered in dark, modern-style murals. These paintings, created during its reconstruction between 1978 and 1981, have a unique aesthetic that some find deeply peaceful and restive. Reddit While this modern style was a point of contention, leading to the cathedral not being sanctified by the Orthodox Church, it undeniably makes for a visually striking and memorable experience for visitors. Reddit

Photographers often find the murals challenging yet rewarding to capture. The lighting can be subdued, and during peak times or inclement weather, crowds can make it difficult to get unobstructed shots. Reddit However, the sheer artistry and the distinct atmosphere created by these murals are consistently highlighted as a major draw for visitors, making it a must-see within Tsarevets Fortress. Notably, the tower is equipped with an elevator, making it accessible to a wider range of visitors who might otherwise struggle with stairs. Reddit The climb, or elevator ride, is well worth the effort, as the top provides wonderful views over the town of Veliko Tarnovo and the surrounding historical landscape. Reddit+1

It's important to note that the tower's access can be restricted to certain days, so it's advisable to confirm its opening schedule before your visit. Reddit This elevated perspective offers a fantastic opportunity to appreciate the strategic location of the fortress and the beauty of the region, complementing the interior experience of the cathedral itself.

Historical Context and Status

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God holds a unique place in history, having been rebuilt between 1978 and 1981. Reddit The modern style of its paintings, while artistically significant, led to a divergence from traditional Orthodox practices. This resulted in the cathedral not receiving official sanctification from the Orthodox Church, which means it no longer functions as a place of worship. Reddit

Instead, it has evolved into a significant tourist attraction and an art exhibition space within the historic Tsarevets Fortress. Reddit+1 This status means visitors come to admire its unique art and historical context rather than to attend religious services. The surrounding fortress itself is a well-preserved testament to the era of the Vlach-Bulgarian Tsars, adding another layer of historical depth to the visit. Reddit
