"This museum needs six stars!

Mr Cook did an amazing job of telling us the story (and serendipitously we were able to assist getting an important item to a relatives friend!)

This is a must see museum if you are at all interested in the abolitionist movement, the end of plantation slavery in North America, and the beginning of the Underground Railroad.

Highly interesting museum and good selection of t-shirts, educational materials and souvenirs.

And our former Prime Minister says Canada has no culture of its own - untrue!

Mr Josiah Henson sounded like a God fearing and courageous man!"

"This is a great piece of Canadian and American history that is absolutely worth visiting! The artifacts, historical overview, the preserved homes, church, sawmill, and cemetery were all very moving. A small museum but it represents such an incredible man, community, and a component of the Underground Railroad that we must never forget. Staff and guide were all fantastic and they have a nice gift shop where we bought a few items."

The Legacy of Josiah Henson

Reverend Josiah Henson was a remarkable figure whose life story is central to the Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site. Born into slavery in Maryland in 1789, Henson escaped to Canada in 1830, where he became a leader in the British American Institute (later known as the Dawn Settlement) near Dresden, Ontario. This settlement provided a haven and opportunities for formerly enslaved people fleeing the United States via the Underground Railroad. Henson's autobiography, 'The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Orator for the God Against Slavery,' published in 1849, was a powerful testament to the horrors of slavery and the resilience of those who escaped it. Reddit

His life and work were instrumental in the establishment of a thriving Black community in Canada. The historic site preserves his home and other buildings from the Buxton settlement, offering visitors a tangible connection to this crucial period in North American history. The site serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality. Reddit

Exploring the Buxton Settlement

The Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site is more than just a museum; it's an open-air exploration of the Buxton Settlement, a community founded in 1849 by formerly enslaved African Americans. This settlement, established with the help of abolitionists, aimed to provide land, education, and a safe haven for those seeking freedom. Visitors can walk among the preserved buildings, including homes, a church, and a sawmill, which offer a glimpse into the daily lives and aspirations of these pioneering individuals. Reddit

Each structure tells a story of hard work, community building, and the pursuit of self-sufficiency. The site's commitment to historical accuracy ensures that visitors gain a deep appreciation for the challenges and triumphs of this unique community. It's a place where history is not just read about, but experienced. Reddit

The Underground Railroad Connection

The site is a significant landmark in understanding the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans to escape to free states and Canada. Josiah Henson himself was a conductor on this network, helping many find freedom. The interpretive center provides comprehensive exhibits that detail the operations of the Underground Railroad, the risks involved, and the bravery of both the escapees and those who aided them. Reddit

Learning about this clandestine journey offers a profound perspective on the fight against slavery. The artifacts and narratives presented at the site underscore the immense courage required to seek liberty and the vital role Canada played as a sanctuary. It's a history that must never be forgotten. Reddit
