Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Edmonton City Hall's unique architecture and its role as a central civic space. The seasonal plaza activities, like the summer fountains and winter skating rink, are frequently highlighted as enjoyable free attractions. However, some reviews mention frustration with downtown construction impacting access and general city planning.

"This review is about construction season 2025 alone. The city itself is great, lots to do, beautiful river valley and great citizens.

I’m honestly surprised there aren’t more reviews of the City of Edmonton here. Maybe people have trouble finding the listing? Or maybe there’s some kind of arrangement with Google? Who knows.

That said, I’m really choked about the construction schedule this year, I’m sure I’m not the only one. Yes, I get it—we need to fix sidewalks, roads, etc. It happens every year, logically perceived short term pain for long term gain. But with the LRT mainline heading west, you’d think they’d be mindful of keeping key traffic corridors between downtown and the west end open. Nope.

I’m really wondering who sat around the big city planning table and decided it was a good idea to block every Avenue heading west from the city core. That includes 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, and yes . . . of course 104 Avenue. Sure, some key intersections might need to be fully shut down to allow for below-road infrastructure and other intersectional work. But I can’t help thinking some Jo-boy serving lunch probably glanced at the plan and chuckled—I know I would’ve. Or maybe when the crack city crew laid it all out and stepped back to admire their work . . . they all shared a collective giggle. Too late now they thought.

Did Jasper Ave really have to have the pipes done this year? Why not last year or in 2026?? And don’t try avoiding Jasper and 104 by scooching to the Ledge (Legislature) and begin heading toward 100 Ave and onward to LeMarchand (a personal fav shortcut of mine). You’ll have to go 99 Ave now. The whole intersection is conveniently closed at 100 Ave-west of 109 st. But on 99 there is also a pylon summer Olympic course setup :-). Someone received the prized City Planner Gold Star award for these additional creative moves-over and above Jasper and 104.

It honestly feels like a parody. The city should’ve hired George Costanza, who could’ve brought in Stephen Koren (yes, that Seinfeld episode—Van Buren Boys!). Pretty sure even they would’ve had some better insight into planning this.

I’ll gladly update my rating if the end result is worth the hassle. But for now—poor planning, poor execution.

"I have lived in Edmonton most of my life so I remember back in 1990 when this building was being built. It is designed by a famous architect here in Edmonton Gene Dub of Dub architects. Quite controversial at the time. But after it was finished in 1992 it has aged well. It has 2 pyramid parts which evokes the Rocky Mountains. I work downtown and walk by it or through it all the time on my daily lunch hour walks. And have always enjoyed its architecture. It has a great public space. City hall basically functions as a place for City Council meetings with councillor and Mayor offices. Other City service are a block away at the Edmonton City Tower. Lots of City functions and ceremonies take place here. During the winter months the Downtown Farmers Market is in the building on Saturday’s.
