What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Hamilton Cemetery as a beautiful and well-maintained historical site, perfect for peaceful walks and exploring centuries of local history. Many appreciate the free entry and the opportunity to learn through guided tours. However, finding specific ancestors, especially those with flat gravestones, can be a significant challenge due to the cemetery's vastness and upkeep.
"Great spot for a walk! This was part of our first stop (along with Dundurn Castle) on our “Guess where you’ll go? Spooky sights and ghostly tales tour”. There is a lot of history in this cemetery and with over 75000 people interred there, there is a lot of stories. The grounds are well taken care of, and there is much to see. We walked around for almost two hours looking at crypts, old head stones and historical plaques and STILL didn’t see it all. We will be back to take another look for sure."

"If anyone is coming here looking for specific Ancestors you MAY be disappointed. The head office is helpful to a point, BUT if your ancestors had flat/ ground level grave stones it is almost impossible to find anyone here. *Soil and grass have grown all around the face areas of these flat stones to the point you cannot read ANYTHING on them. You would need some helpful ( non damaging) tools to remove the hard growth. And, I don't mean simple grass cuttings from the lawn maintenance crews laying on them you can whisk away. The head office has certain hours but also break for a one hour lunch each business day (12-1:00pm). They also have to buzz you in the office via a brief conversation on a door speaker. Large alphabetical area signs are on the premises but you will need to go inside to talk with someone for specific grave plots.
If you are looking for an upright stone - you have a chance.
Plot row identifications from the office are meaningless as the markers have vanished. The head office will actually put in a work order to the maintenance crew and they eventually place a pylon on your flat stone grave you are looking for if needed.
The head office has the ability to search for plots on computer....why can they not make it public on their website? Find A Grave is also useless for flat stones for this cemetery. Good Luck if searching York Blvd for a flat stone....time may, or may not, run out for you while you are stumbling around aimlessly on these premises lol."

"This cemetery is the oldest in the city beginning in the late 1800's. It is a gorgeous and well taken care of cemetary and is a perfect place to take your dog for a walk or even a bike ride along the concrete paths."
