What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers generally find the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge to be an efficient crossing, often preferring it for its lower congestion compared to other border points. The scenic views of the Niagara River are a notable positive. However, some users point out the need for better lane management, especially when heading into the US, to avoid bottlenecks and delays for truckers.
"The 2 lanes going from Canada to Usa diverges from the right lane, try to stay on the rightmost lane possible as it will diverge to 5-10 lanes, meanwhile the left lane will be stuck at 1 land until the very end and cost you 1-2 hours more time to travel. Not the fastest border crossing compared to Windsor. Has some good view both sides. One good deal is, you don’t pay toll going from Canada to USA."

"There are a few different options for crossing the border between the United States and Canada. Based on where I was and where I was headed, the Lewiston Queenston Bridge ended up being the most efficient for me to get to Ontario. I understand that this bridge usually has the least congestion compared to the Peace Bridge (bonkers!) or the Whirlpool Bridge (which only accepts drivers with a NEXUS pass).
This beautiful arch bridge opened in 1962 and has five lanes over the Niagara River. It serves as the terminus of I-190 in New York and Highway 405 in Ontario. Very good signage points the way to the border and there is a "Last Exit in USA" sign to keep you from doing something dumb.
A toll of $5.00 USD (or $6.50 CAD) is grabbed at the border but only heading in to Canada. There is a tollbooth after the border crossing and I was surprised that my North Carolina Quickpass worked."

"The border agents here are usually better than other ports of entry and don’t give you a hard time. Usually less busy as well, prefer this over Fort Erie’s."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Once across, consider visiting nearby family-friendly attractions like the Niagara Falls State Park on the US side or various attractions in Niagara Falls, Ontario. These offer more engaging activities for children than the bridge crossing itself. Pack snacks and drinks to keep everyone comfortable during the journey.
🚚 Truckers and Commercial Drivers
Understanding the toll structure (free into the US, toll into Canada) and having proper documentation ready can streamline the process. The bridge connects directly to major highways like I-190 and Highway 405, facilitating onward journeys.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
While stopping on the bridge for extended photo sessions is not advisable due to traffic safety, utilize designated pull-offs or viewpoints on either side of the border before or after crossing. Consider the historical context, knowing that the powerful river has shaped the landscape over millennia, adding a layer of depth to your imagery.

Understanding Border Crossing Dynamics
Travelers often share insights on optimizing their crossing experience. A recurring tip is to utilize the rightmost lanes when heading into the United States, as these lanes diverge into more options, potentially saving considerable time compared to the left lane, which can bottleneck. While crossing into the US is toll-free, there's a fee for entering Canada, which can be paid with various transponder systems.
Social media content frequently highlights the scenic beauty of the Niagara River from the bridge, making it more than just a transit point. However, it's also important to be aware of potential delays, especially during peak travel times or due to unforeseen circumstances like protests or security alerts, which can lead to significant backups. Checking live camera feeds is a practical strategy to gauge current wait times before embarking on your journey.
The Natural Wonder of the Niagara River
This area is known for its immense natural power. The river carries an astonishing volume of water, with over 700,000 gallons of 'negative ions' flowing per second. While the bridge itself offers stunning views of the river and the gorge, nearby attractions like Niagara Falls State Park and the Niagara Parks system provide more immersive experiences of the falls and the surrounding natural beauty.
For those interested in the engineering and natural forces at play, the New York Power Authority's facilities are also located in the vicinity, harnessing the river's energy. The sheer scale of the river and its historical significance make the crossing a visually impressive experience, even for those just passing through.
