"Amazing view.
I visit here frequently.

It's a bit chilly up here so always carry a jacket.

You get a good view of Alexander bridge, Parliament hill, and skyline of Gatineau park.

It's feels calm and serene up here.

A must visit place of you are in Ottawa."

Damanpreet Singh

"Beautiful place, beautiful atmosphere, a very nice place for a walk with mates or family. The bridge, the Parliament and the view point all are in a walkable distance and they are also few museums around.! You can spend some quality time with others. Worth visiting."

"On a prominent hill behind the National Gallery of Canada is Nepean Point. Here you will find spectacular views of the Ottawa River, the Parliament buildings, major hills park and of Gatineau's waterfront. One of the most popular attractions is the statue of Samuel de Champlain explorer, cartographer, diplomat, and known to be the Father of New France, including; founder of Quebec City, part of the Great Lakes and Saint John New Bruinswick to mention just a few locations. but due to construction, (or maybe Champlain didnt want to catch covid, lol) Champlain's statue has been removed. I believe the construction is part of a renovation to the point to make it more wheelchair accessible. Despite the construction I still recommend you coming to Nepean Point for the slightly obstructed view and to look at; the 100 ft long stainless steel art work of a tree without branches by artist Roxie Paine. I find it is necessary to view this odd looking statue's long length up close to appreciate it more than just seeing it as a long metal thing out of the ground from a distance. There are also some large granite rocks that have had arabesques decorative engraving sandblasted into its stone. This land art was created by Bill Varzan and it reminds me of indigenous people's earth story petroglyphs found all over the world.

Nepean Point is very close to Majors Hill Park, so why not check it out.

If you like my review, please give it a thumbs up. Thanks."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Revitalization of Kìwekì Point

Kìwekì Point, formerly known as Nepean Point, has undergone a significant transformation. This revitalization project, which saw the site closed since 2019, officially reopened in spring 2025. The project aimed to not only enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the lookout but also to honor Indigenous heritage. The name change to Kìwekì, meaning 'returning to one's homeland' in the Algonquin language, signifies a gesture of reconciliation and a new way of viewing public space. Instagram+1

The redevelopment includes new landscaping, modern architectural elements like the 'Whispering Point' structure, and improved accessibility features. The goal was to create a more inclusive and engaging experience for all visitors. The design, often attributed to Janet Rosenberg & Studio, blends contemporary architecture with the natural beauty of the surroundings, offering visitors a fresh perspective on this iconic Ottawa viewpoint. Instagram+1

This transformation has quickly made Kìwekì Point a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike, particularly for its breathtaking views and its thoughtful integration of cultural significance. It stands as a testament to thoughtful urban planning and a commitment to acknowledging and respecting Indigenous history. TikTokInstagram

Capturing the Perfect Shot

Kìwekì Point is a photographer's paradise, especially during the 'golden hour.' The panoramic views of Parliament Hill, the Ottawa River, and the Gatineau skyline are simply spectacular. TikTokInstagram Many visitors recommend using a wide-angle lens to capture the full sweep of the landscape, while a telephoto lens can be useful for focusing on architectural details of Parliament Hill. Instagram

Beyond the iconic cityscape, the site itself offers unique photographic opportunities. The 'Whispering Point' structure provides interesting lines and perspectives, and the art installations, such as the stainless steel tree and sandblasted granite rocks, add artistic elements to your photos. InstagramReddit Remember to bring a jacket, as it can get breezy, which might affect camera stability in windy conditions. Reddit

For the best light, aim for sunset. The way the sun casts a warm glow over the city creates a truly magical atmosphere, perfect for capturing memorable images. TikTokInstagram While drone photography might be restricted, the ground-level views are more than enough to fill your camera roll with stunning shots of Ottawa. Instagram

A Walk Through History and Culture

Kìwekì Point is steeped in history, with its origins as Nepean Point. The site features a prominent statue of Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer often called the 'Father of New France.' Instagram His presence here connects visitors to the early European exploration and settlement of the region. The location itself, overlooking the Ottawa River, has been a strategic and scenic point for centuries. Instagram

The recent revitalization has woven Indigenous culture into the fabric of the park. The name Kìwekì, meaning 'returning to one's homeland' in the Algonquin language, is a powerful acknowledgment of the land's original stewards. Instagram+1 This cultural integration is evident in the art installations and the overall design philosophy, which aims to foster a deeper connection between visitors and the land's heritage. Instagram

Adjacent to Major's Hill Park and the National Gallery of Canada, Kìwekì Point is part of a rich cultural and historical corridor in Ottawa. Exploring this area allows for a comprehensive understanding of the city's past, from exploration to contemporary art and Indigenous reconciliation. Reddit
