In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Unique Double-Decker Design

The Princess of Wales Theatre is renowned for being the only double-decker theatre in the world. This unique architectural feature means the seating is split into two distinct levels, offering a different perspective depending on where you sit. The upper level, or Dress Circle, provides a more elevated view, while the lower level, the Orchestra, places you closer to the action. TikTok

This design can influence your seating choice significantly. While the Orchestra offers intimacy with the performance, the Dress Circle can provide a broader overview of the stage. Some patrons prefer the front rows of the Dress Circle for a good balance of proximity and elevation, especially if they have shorter companions. Reddit It's worth exploring virtual tours or seating charts to visualize the view from your chosen seats. Reddit

When selecting seats, consider that the 'sweet spot' for many is around rows C and D in the center orchestra, offering a great balance. However, some find row F even more comfortable. For those concerned about legroom or being behind taller individuals, the front rows of the Dress Circle, even on the sides (house left or right), can be advantageous as there's no one directly in front of you. Reddit

Navigating Seating Choices for the Best View

Choosing the right seats at the Princess of Wales Theatre can greatly enhance your experience. While center orchestra seats in rows C through F are frequently recommended for their balanced view, personal preference plays a big role. Reddit Some audience members find that sitting further back in the orchestra, like row H, offers a more relaxed experience with a clear view, especially if the theatre is well-raked. Reddit

For those considering the Dress Circle, the front rows (like row H mentioned in one discussion) can offer a good perspective, but it's crucial to be aware of the overhang from the level above, which might obstruct the top of the stage in some seats. Reddit Conversely, sitting too far back in the orchestra might lead to obstructed views if there are taller patrons in front. Reddit

Ultimately, the 'best' seat depends on the show and your personal viewing style. Websites like Seat Plan used to offer user-uploaded seat views, but these are no longer available for Toronto theatres. Reddit Utilizing the Mirvish Productions virtual tour is a practical step to get a visual sense of the theatre's layout and potential sightlines before making your booking. Reddit

This prime location means you're spoiled for choice when it comes to pre- or post-show activities. Queen Street West, just a short walk away, is a haven for shoppers and foodies, boasting a trendy atmosphere with unique boutiques and diverse culinary offerings. Reddit

Beyond shopping and dining, the area is rich with other attractions. The iconic CN Tower is within easy walking distance, offering breathtaking city views. For those looking for a more modern urban experience, 'The Well,' a large shopping and food complex, is located southwest of the theatre and is a great place to explore. Reddit This proximity allows visitors to easily combine a theatre visit with other popular Toronto sights, making for a full day of exploration. Reddit
